Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted July 26, 2018 Moderators Posted July 26, 2018 If you are a veteran who during the years of 1991 - 2016 was discharged from military service with disability that the military had rated at 30% or less, you may be entitled to a refund of taxes that were deducted from the disability payment that you received at the time you were discharged. See: https://www.moaa.org/Content/Publications-and-Media/News-Articles/2018-News-Articles/Number-of-Disabled-Vets-to-Get-Tax-Refunds-Alarms-Congress.aspx Under that law that Congress has passed in order to correct this illegal deduction of tax payments, you will not need to prove the amount of taxes actually deducted from your disability payment. You will only need to file a simple form on which you state the year that you were discharged and in addition request a set payment established in the law that is based upon that year that you were discharged. The set amount ranges from $1,250 to $3,300. The total amounts due the affected veterans are estimated to be some $280,000,000. If you believe that you paid more than that set amount, you will have the right to prove such and to receive that mount that you actually paid. NOTE: This payment is related to certain veterans who had a military rated disability of 30% or less. It is NOT related to a VA rated disability. The VA disability system differs from that of the military system. Quote Gregory
