Fifth of May

It is time for the annual telling of my Titanic joke.

In addition to the terrible tragedy of the lives lost when the Titanic sank, Mexico also suffered a tragedy. After docking in New York, the Titanic was scheduled to sail on south, around Florida, and across the Gulf of Mexico, to deliver the first ever consignment of Mayonnaise to the people of Mexico, who were eagerly awaiting an alternative to having salsa with everything. When word reached Mexico that the Titanic had sunk, Mexicans were so disappointed that they decided to commemorate the disaster every year, with an observance they call "Sinko de Mayo."

First time I told it was to a small group of four people, one of whom was a Mexican citizen who had recently married a friend of mine. She seemed to think it was funny.

When you really look at it critically, it is Americans that the joke makes fun of, with our generally poor knowledge of other languages, and often not quite getting things right.

I also posted the joke on the Analog (science fiction magazine) discussion forum where I frequently defend Creationism and refute Evolutionism with all the scientifically literate folks who participate in that forum.

One of the people who responded to the joke posted a picture of Hellman's Mayonnaise. I couldn't help but reply that as a Creationist, I prefer Miracle Whip, and evolutionists can have the Hellman's.

Who says you can't have fun amid rigorous debate?
