This morning, the United States Supreme Court issued a ruling that the 14th Amendment applies the "Excessive Fines Clause" of the 8th Amendment to the states.

Just read about this decision. It seems to be one of the few issues that had widespread support from both sides of the political aisle and was a unanimous Supreme Court decision. A rarity.

Too often people have been stripped of their property even when no crime was committed. People have sold property and were carrying cash for new purchases, only to be stopped and have their money taken by law enforcement as if they were criminals. Even when there was a crime, seizures of belongings were excessive and was a tempting practice by local police and sheriff's to fund their departments.

Very thankful they got this one right. So the real question is, do states have to return excessive civil forfeiture seizures?  I know TN was doing it big time for awhile on i40...
