Interesting article! Jimmy Akin essentially says the same thing and adds another point that would appear to strongly support who 666 points to.

It simply amazes me that we are so confused about the beast and the number 666. Akin skipped over the whore and I wonder why? I want to make it clear that the whore was riding the beast. She at one time was steering him as his seventh head, but he is the main head the eighth! This is the same beast, Daniel saw but at a different time. How many times do we constantly state that the Book of Daniel is the Book of Revelation continued. Daniel closes the book and John reopened it and he was shown the entire world history. In Rev 13:7 is the word saints and it comes from the Greek word "hagios," and it means sacred, pure, blameless, and consecrated. When you look at the sentences when the English word saints are used the word make sense except for Rev 13:17. We need to continue to understand the Greek word meaning and the beast and lest not be too hasty!

Rev Chapter Eleven states clearly about the Two Witnesses. They will have great power to shut up the rain and power over the water turning it to blood and to smite the earth with many plagues as they want. Now, this is also similar to Moses and Elijah! The Two Witnesses is the Bible and it will be used by the 144,000. If that be the case does the beast make war with the 144,000? The beast is not even on the scene while the Two Witness work is being done. Rev Chapter Eight explains what their work is and exactly what it will do to the earth! But notice when the beast comes on the scene:

And when they shall have finished their Testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them. Rev 11:7 

Now it should be clear that the word saint should not have been used in Rev 13:17 but instead the Bible which is sacred, pure, blameless, and consecrated which help the saints to become saved. The beast will attack the Bible and there is more proof in Daniel 12:7:

And I heard THE MAN clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when HE held up HIS RIGHT HAND and HIS LEFT HAND unto Heaven, and sware by HIM that LIVETH forever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when HE shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished. Dan 12:7

THE MAN was YAHSHUA and HE Swore to HIS FATHER that after the 3 1/2 years, salvation for man would be finish. Probation will begin and the power of the Bible had been accomplished and it was time to scatter HIS people to safety. The beast was coming during the "hour," of probation which is two months, 1,290 days! The Rev 11:8-14 is the summation that the beast arrives and he does what the Whore and her daughters could not do stop the 144,000 with the TWO WITNESSES, the Bible from its prophesying and his power. He made war with the Word and burn and bury it but the truth cannot be destroyed. The Ark of the Covenant is what the Word is all about and it rises up to Heaven! So his war with the Word really was fruitless as well, however, the whore like Pharaoh could not stop the plagues!

Rev 13:18 is so simple we lost our original character (THE ALMIGHTY ONES LIKENESS Gen 1:26) when the Adams was created! The beast number is humanity from Seven Righteous to six unrighteous. Three human beings stood out and Rev 17:8 states clearly "the beast that was, and is not, and yet is," has to do with periods of time! Each time the beast was unrighteous and that was Nimrod who "was," (even though he started false worship and many religions they all will come to their end), "is not" is the Whore (the papacy thinking he could change THE MOST HIGH'S Laws and he can't), "yet is", he is the eighth, the man of sin that goes into perdition that YAHSHUA spoke of and Paul in 2 Thessalonica Chapter Two. Paul gives a complete detail about him. He destroyed the whore in Armageddon during probation (these two months there is no intercession Salvation is close)! Then he is destroyed trying to have the nerve to make war with YAHSHUA! He is immediately put in the Lake of fire with the false prophet and he comes to his end. It is all there we just have to put the puzzle together and it fits.
