The PA of one of the neurosurgeons who has been in this specialty for at least 10 years ( I think she said 13, but I don't remember for sure) was telling the staff on the surgical floor about this case this morning. She said that there has not been one case of transmitting that disease to another person per surgical instruments. Period. So, the chances of one of the 6 patients contracting the disease because of this "exposure" is slim to none. That is the good news!! Another hospital in the area had a similar situation some time back, only they chose not to publicize it. An employee did, however, resulting in some unfavorable press for that hospital. Pockey Posted May 19, 2006 Posted May 19, 2006 How do we even know it was from the surgical supplies? Did they identify the prion from the supplies? Some infectious disease folks even think that a lot of us already have the CJD prion in us and that our normal immune system keeps it at bay. But those with suppressed immune systems (HIV, chemo, elderly etc) are more prone for the prion to cause the disease. Quote
Pockey Posted May 19, 2006 Posted May 19, 2006 I wouldn't even trip about the CJD case. What is a serious problem is the spread of MRSA. Methicillin Resistant Staph Aureus. A lot of patients in many hospitals across the U.S. are the picking this up by just being in the hospital. And then there's community acquired MRSA, which is affecting people just about in their normal everyday lives. Bacteria resistant to our current antibiotics is becoming a serious problem. Quote

So serilizations processes that are made for living matter do not work on prions. spelcialized processes can destroy prions, but those porcesses are not typically used where prions are not suspected to be present.
