The average Social Security benefit for retired workers in 2017 was $1,369 per month. That comes out to $16,428 in annual benefits for a single person or $32,856 per year for a couple — about $25,000 less than the U.S. median household income of $57,617.

I checked it out for some of the states I would consider moving to.  Some of the cities mentioned are pretty dangerous places for retired people to live.  For example, Albuquerque, NM is currently ranked #1 in the highest rate of robbery and auto theft in the U.S..

When reading through the list I did notice that some of the cities seemed to also be on the top crime city list!!

Upon retirement, our SS income will be about half of our current income, although we do have a modest 401K account.

But, if we retire off grid, there will be no rent, no satellite TV bill, no renters insurance, no PG&E bill, water will be solar pumped, batteries will be charged by solar, battery powered chainsaw and yard tools, cut back to one insured vehicle, solar and campfire cooking when appropriate, wood heat, etc.

We'll keep the cell phones, of course, but drop the tablets from cellular service.

Unfortunately, property tax here in CA is $2,000 per year and climbing. We could go homeless and live on the streets, but my wife would most certainly divorce me. I expect that once the Democrats turn this country into a totalitarian state, we will be forced off of our land and relocated or killed.

Money goes a lot farther in the midwest. Think Missouri, Iowa, Arkansas, Kansas, Illinois, Nebraska, Oklahoma.
