cricket Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 Culturally speaking, is there a difference as to what is acceptable and expected in terms of discipline? Is there a difference as to what is expected in the home and what is exhibited in public? Is there ever a time (or culture in which) when physical punishment (i.e. spanking, grasping another firmly by the arm or shoulders, slapping, or anything else that involves physical contact) should be permissible? If so, is this type of disciplinary action ever appropriately administered by anyone other than a parent or legal guardian? By a teacher, perhaps? Quote
cricket Posted May 22, 2006 Author Posted May 22, 2006 No opinion on this? Perhaps you're waiting on my opinion first. It is my opinion that it is NEVER appropriate to use physical punishment in any form. It has come to my attention that there are other cultures within the community that do believe it is appropriate. Why??? Quote
Barbara Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 For us we do use spanking once in a while. We don't use it all the time for every little thing. We use it when they don't listen and continue to do things that could hurt them. I don't think it is approriate to spank in public and nor to I think any one but the parents should be spanking. I would have problem if some one else spanked my kids. Quote .....Love others as well as you love yourself. Matt 22:39 (The Message Bible)
Guest Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 spanking may be a part of the discipline process, and it should never be done in anger.... likewise, it depends on the child and how they respond... typically corporal punishment is only good till the child is about 9 to 11.... I have two kids, one responded well to spankings, so he wasn't spanked that often.... the other child did not respond to spanking so other things were used as she got older.... so you gotta know your kids..... Michelle Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 I have used it occaisionally, with warning given beforehand, for specific situations, not in anger, and not much anymore. My boys both told me they hated it and wanted an alternative, so we came up with alternatives together and that works. M Quote
cricket Posted May 25, 2006 Author Posted May 25, 2006 Steve, Michelle, et al, what about discipline administered by a teacher or care-giver? Do you feel it is ever justifiable that a care-giver other than a legal parent or guardian administer physical discipline? Quote

I would not and did not give teachers or caregivers permission to spank my child.... I cannot think of any situation that might require spanking that the parent should not be the one administering it.... Quote

cricket Posted May 25, 2006 Author Posted May 25, 2006 Steve, et al, Is there a legal right to administer any sort of physical discipline to a child at any time? Does that right exist in any Adventist school? How about yelling, pushing, shoving? Do teachers have a right at all? Is there any culture in North America where this sort of discipline is allowed legally?? Quote

I cannot speak for adventist schools, though I know the one that my kids attended, teachers could not administer corporal punishment.
Quote:
How about yelling, pushing, shoving? I am not sure what you mean when you say "any culture" in North America... people do all kinds of things in the name of discipline, however the laws of the land would prevent or are suppose to prevent a child from being endangered or abused....
