Robert Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 Proof: John 8:1 ...Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4 and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 In the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” 6 They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “If any one of you is without *the sin [i.e., adultery], let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. 9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.” John 11:1 Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 And it was that Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. 36 Now [as the story goes] one of the Pharisees was requesting Him to dine with him. And He entered the Pharisee’s house, and reclined at the table. 37 And behold, there was a woman [Mary] in the city who was a sinner [i.e., an immoral woman]; and when she learned that He was reclining at the table in the Pharisee’s house, she brought an alabaster vial of perfume, 38 and standing behind Him at His feet, weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears, and kept wiping them with the hair of her head, and kissing His feet, and anointing them with the perfume. 39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet He would know who and what sort of person this woman is who is touching Him, that she is a sinner [i.e., an immoral woman/prostitute].” Matt 26:6 Now when Jesus was in Bethany, at the home of Simon the leper [whom He had healed], 7 a woman [Mary] came to Him with an alabaster vial of very costly perfume, and she poured it upon His head as He reclined at the table. 8 But the disciples were indignant when they saw this, and said, “Why this waste? 9 “For this perfume might have been sold for a high price and the money given to the poor.” 10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them,“Why do you bother the woman? For she has done a good deed to Me. 11 “For the poor you have with you always; but you do not always have Me. 12 “For when she poured this perfume upon My body, she did it to prepare Me for burial." 13 “Truly I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done shall also be spoken of in memory of her.” John 12:1 Jesus, therefore, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 So they [Mary, Martha & Lazarus] made Him a supper there, and Martha was serving; but Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with Him. 3 Mary therefore took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples, who was intending to betray Him, said, 5 “Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii, and given to poor people?” 6 Now he said this, not because he was concerned about the poor, but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box, he used to pilfer what was put into it. 7 Jesus therefore said, “Let her alone, in order that she may keep it for the day of My burial. 8 “For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have Me.” John 20:1 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb [probably to and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. Luke 8:1 …He [Jesus] began going about from one city and village to another, proclaiming and preaching the kingdom of God; and the twelve were with Him, 2 and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary who was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out…. * In the Greek manuscripts "the" precedes "sin". I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears, and wiped them with her hair. 45 “You gave Me no kiss; but she, since the time I came in, has not ceased to kiss My feet. 46 “You did not anoint My head with oil, but she anointed My feet with perfume. 47 “For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, [:"red"]for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little.”[/] Quote

Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted May 22, 2006 Moderators Posted May 22, 2006 I do not have any problem with Robert's thesis. It is one that has been around in Christianity for many years. However, I do not think we treat Scripture well when we call the evidence that Robert has presented "proof." It is far from proof. To call it such does not do us well. Again,I am not rejecting the thesis. I am simply saying it is less than proof. Quote Gregory

bevin Posted May 23, 2006 Posted May 23, 2006 Agree. Now, what about the next pair of steps in the Holy Blood Holy Grail / Da Vinci Code speculation... (a) Mary has been unfairly demoted from an reputable sister of L & Martha to a whore, and ( Mary was Jesus' wife Is there any reasonable counter that causes either of these to be clearly wrong? /Bevin Quote

melvin mccarty Posted May 23, 2006 Posted May 23, 2006 The translators of the New English Bible state in a footnote that the story of the woman caught in adultery is not in some of the manuscripts and has no fixed position in other sources so they place it at the end of the book of John with this explanation. mel Quote

Jesus was unique, to the extreme. He was divine and He was fully human. His divinity was sinless, but the humanity He assumed was exceedingly sinful. He came to undo our situation in Adam, not to marry and have children. Even if the humanity of Christ did have children they would be sinners. Quote
