Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted July 25, 2019 Moderators Posted July 25, 2019 Probably the majority of us have finished our formal education. Those who have not finished their formal education are probably near its end. But, most of us do not want to stop learning, even if it is in a more informal context. Depending upon your age, often academic schools will offer instruction either free or at a low cost. It may be worth your while for you to investigate to see if such is offered in the area where you live. In addition, some of the best known educational institutions in the U.S. offer Internet instruction for markedly reduced prices. It may be worth your time to investigate this. On a minimal basis, some SDA schools will offer such, but this is probably not well developed. The following is a commercial institution that I have used multiple times. It's formal name is The Great Courses and is located in Chantilly ,VA. * It offers more than 1,100 courses that extend over a very wide range of subjects. * Courses are offered on an individual basis and in addition under a plan by which for a monthly fee for as little as $10, one may access all courses offered. * All courses may be obtained that that can be livestreamed and downloaded to your digital device. Or, they may be obtained as a DVD along with other print material, for a slightly higher fee, which be as little as $10, if you are purchasing it on sale. * One of the courses that I took came to me as 16 DVDs, 48 hours of instruction, with additional printed material. Other courses are much shorter in length. * Courses such as the one I mentioned above may have a list price stretching into the hundreds of dollars. However, Great Courses constantly has sales going on and may list a large number of courses at a reduced price of 10 to 15% of the list price * Currently I have two courses on order for $35 each. One is slightly less than 10% of the list price and the other is slightly more than 10%, but less than 15%. NOTE: I have never purchased from them at their list price. I generally only purchase if I can do so at 20%, or less of the list price. * This company offers a lifetime guarantee: This means that you can trade one in for another course, during your life time. It also means that if a course purchased from them is destroyed for any reason (including fire) it will be replaced free of charge, if that course is still available for sale. * If your chose to purchase before August 15, 2019; priority code 167431 will get you access to the current sale catalogue, which is offering many courses for a fee of either $25 or $35. * Purchases may be made by telephone, over the internet, and by mail: The Great Courses 4840 Westfield Blvd, # 500 Chantilly, VA 20151-2299 www.choosegreatcourses.com 800-832-2412 NOTE: This forum does not allow for people to use it for commercial purposes. Those who attempt to do so have their posts removed quickly. However, on a limited basis, mention may be made of a commercial activity that may be of value to people here. I will do such in this thread as I reference one such that I have personally used and I have found it to be of value. But, my doing so does not open this thread up to wide-spread commercial usage. Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted July 25, 2019 Author Moderators Posted July 25, 2019 I will mention one course that is currently on sale for $25 and $35. The non-sale price for this course is $335/$385. Course # 2256, Biblical Hebrew: Learning a Sacred Language. It consists of 18 hours of lectures. It is taught by Michael Carasik of the University of Pennsylvania. While I would not suggest that it will prepare you to translate the Old Testament, it is designed to give you a better understanding of the OT as written in the Hebrew language as used in the Bible. Moderators james423 Posted August 9, 2019 Moderators Posted August 9, 2019 This is also advertised right here on this forum. I use it a lot to gain information I need or want to review. Instead of paying a fee for a permanent copy of one course with 24 or 36 or whatever number of lectures, you pay a monthly fee and get to watch (via streaming video) as many lectures as you can fit into your schedule. I keep a record of each lecture watched, the date watched, and a summary of the lecture. And I have about 30 pages of listings for the past three years or so. Quote James Brenneman
