When I served on the teaching faculty of the U.S. Army Chaplain school, I had to deal with this subject in my classes.  My approach was to tell the students:

*  To listen.

*  To not get defensive.

*  To begin with the approach that if you were accused of being a sexist/racist, there was some part of your relationship that you needed to change.

I do not say that the professor at Andrews was a racist.  I can say that his reported response, if accurate, failed both the student and failed his responsibilities as a Professor at Andrews.

Well, anyone who has taken even a little Science will know that Stereotypes are real, otherwise they wouldn't be Stereotypes.  I've known / worked with some folks (even some friends) who were what I would call "professional victims" that would play the part of an ambush predator and jump all over an innocent situation. That being said your bulleted protocols are a good mitigation if one finds themselves in that situation.

I would offer a different viewpoint on this. Sometimes the "race card" gets used to gain an advantage over someone of a different race, usually white. Really annoying when someone tries this to gain the advantage. The link is to an example where this was tried on a professor at Andrews:

Stereotypes are a two way street. And perjorative names also get used going both ways also.

Yup. I am all-too familiar with this on a personal level where a bunch of black students would go around the school, cornering white students in wash rooms etc and pounding them out, and then drawing the race card should the said white student try to defend themselves. YES. This was at a church school.

I recall walking into a patients room in the hospital one time and two black respiratory therapists did not observe that I had walked in behind them. (I often walk quietly and come up behind people when they had no idea. I should put bells on my shoes like I did for my kids when they were toddlers!) They were discussing problems they were having with "crackers"! When they saw I was there, they became very embarrassed.

The last few times something similar happened to me, I was called "white-wash." Thankfully, this does not happen much anymore. (to me)
