How many times has the USA fail to take the gold in basketball? The best baseball players are signed to the pros out of high school, so who winds up representing us in the olympics? It seems there is a bunch of elite athletes/soccer players/ whatever who do well and the rest of the country admires them and thinks they are a great sporting nation! While the waistline and other portions of the anatomy expand. I know some will argue, but the size of the pool from which the atheletes are drawn does actually make a difference... as does the proportion of budget devoted to sporting development.
