Strange e-mail!

Earlier today I received a strange e-mail:

*  It came from a website known as YouMail.com

*  It stated that today, at a specific time, my wife had made a telephone call, and it provided me with her name and her cell phone number.

*  It listed the name and telephone number that it said she had called.

*  It provided me with an audio recording to the entire conversation that my wife had on that telephone call.  It was her voice.

*  It stated that I had been sent this message because the person whom she had called had installed their app on their phone and had programed it to notify me of any such telephone calls!

*  I have not been able to discuss this with my wife, but I intend to do so as soon as possible.

*  I am posting this as I had no idea that such programs existed and I thought that you-all might like to know.

*  Neither my wife or I have anything to hide from the other.  But, I would not want such to happen to my telephone calls and I do not believe that my wife will be a happy camper over this.

Looks to me like it's a legitimate service provided by the app. What's important to remember is that any phone call can be recorded at any time. We never know who has our our best interests at heart. At least, in this case, the recorded voices were notified--albeit after the fact.

The service may be legitimate.  The person whom my wife called may have known of the action.  The point is:

1)  My wife did not know that a recording was being made and sent to another person, who happened to be me.

2)  That record, and recording, could have been sent to other people, and perhaps (?) was, without her knowledge.

It raises an issue:  The person whom she called was a close family friend.  Why would he have such a record and recording sent to any other person, to include me?

Law vary by state. In some states both parties to the conversation must be aware that they are being recorded. To not inform is a violation of laws regarding wiretaps. Many states allow such recordings as long as at least one person knows they are being recorded. I doubt that there are any states that allow recordings where neither party is informed (except where law enforcement has gotten court orders allowing wiretaps). This, I believe, is why businesses that record for "quality assurance" give you a verbal warning that your call  is being recorded.
