Human Family Tree: Shallow Roots

Jul, 01, 2006

Associated Press

Whoever it was probably lived a few thousand years ago, somewhere in East Asia -- Taiwan, Malaysia and Siberia all are likely locations. He or she did nothing more remarkable than be born, live, have children and die.

Yet this was the ancestor of every person now living on Earth -- the last person in history whose family tree branches out to touch all 6.5 billion people on the planet today.

That means everybody on Earth descends from somebody who was around as recently as the reign of Tutankhamen, maybe even during the Golden Age of ancient Greece. There's even a chance that our last shared ancestor lived at the time of Christ.

I read this report in our Sunday paper it was very interesting.

Read the report carefully.

They are NOT claiming that the entire human race came from just two individuals in the last few thousand years.

Indeed they are not even claiming that we all share ANY genetic material with this one individual.

All they are saying is that one individual, living in a population of millions of humans some ten thousand years ago approximately, can be claimed by everyone alive today as an ancestor.

Yes, it is fascinating - and tells us exactly nothing.

Furthermore, Olson and his colleagues have found that if you go back a little farther -- about 5,000 to 7,000 years ago -- everybody living today has exactly the same set of ancestors. In other words, every person who was alive at that time is either an ancestor to all 6 billion people living today, or their line died out and they have no remaining descendants.

Yes, what they are saying is this.

MATHEMATICALLY, if you start with a pool of thousands of people, and have them mate and produce children, then what happens is this

(a) some become the ancestors of all living

(B) some become the ancestors of none living

© and probably none become the ancestors of a few

Consider four generations, starting with six people

Gen One A B C D E F

Gen Two AB1, AB2 (children of A&B), CD1 CE1

F's line has died out

Gen Three ABCD (child of AB1,CD1) AB (child of AB1 and AB2) CDE (child of CD and CDE) ABCD (child of AB2 and CD1)

Gen Four ABCD ABCDE are the only two possible ancestor pairs producable.

and for ever more ABCD will ALL be common ancestors for everyone born after this! E has gone.

I see that story stirred up the evolutionists.

Some scientists believe that the cheetah population was nearly destroyed 10,000 years ago by a catastrophic event such as a disease or natural disaster that left only 1,000 or so surviving . In 1900 there were approximately 100,000 cheetah worldwide. Present estimates place their number at 10-15 thousand with about 1/10 of those living in captivity.

This belief is based on the level of genetic variation in the species.

AB1 and AB2 are brother and sister, aren't they?

What about AB1 and AB2 who have offspring: AA, BB and the mutations AAB and ABB??

(The rest of the story can be found on Jerry Springer, I'm sure.)

I was using the A B C just to list the ancestors, rather than listing specific genes.

So AA is the same as A, since it doesn't matter for this discussion how many different ways A is an ancestor
