When he came to lay his head on the block, the prince who had charge of the execution asked him if there was any one petition that he could grant him. All that the condemned man asked for was a glass of water. They went and got him a tumbler of water, but his hand trembled so that he could not get it to his mouth.      The prince said to him, "Your life is safe until you drink that water."      He took the prince at his word and dashed the water to the ground. They could not gather it up, and so he saved his life.      By taking God at His word, we can have life's greatest treasure—peace of mind—for the asking. Jesus said, "If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them." This is the blessing with a double if." "If ye know"—this is the knowledge which Christ gives to faith. "If ye do"—this is the obedience which faith gives to Christ. Knowing and doing—these are the twin pillars on which the house of happiness is built. He was poor, but he often gazed with longing at the lovely things displayed in the store window. Yet there was always the glass between. Would he never have a boat? He wondered. Then, one tragic day he was seriously hurt in a street accident. Taken to the hospital, he lay for months recovering. A kind-hearted man passed his bed one day and chatted for a while. Next time he visited the children's ward he brought with him a parcel. Unwrapping it, he placed upon the bed the very boat the lad had seen so often in the shop window. Could it be true? The little fellow gazed in silence. Then, timidly he reached over and touched it. In ecstasy he exclaimed, "There's nothing between—nothing between!" Restriction was gone. It was his own, his very own boat!      Someday soon the kind and loving voice of our Saviour will be heard saying, "Come, ye blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world." He was interrupted from time to time by his young daughter, who was playing on the floor beside him. In an effort to channel her attention to something that would keep her occupied for a long while, he clipped a map of the world from his paper, cut it up in many pieces, and challenged the little lady to put it back together again.      He was amazed when she returned to him in a remarkably short time with the map all pasted together properly, and in reply to his query as to how she was able to do the assignment so rapidly, he was told this:      "Daddy, I just looked on the other side of the paper and found the picture of a man. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him” (1 John 3:2, NIV).      A friend of mine, who travels a lot, had a four-year-old girl who was sure she had learned how to write while her daddy was away. Upon his return from a trip one day, she met him at the door with the good news, “I’ve learned to write, Daddy!”      As all good daddies would do, he looked at her smudged, scribbled paper and said, “You certainly have learned to write. Look at that! Isn’t that wonderful! How beautiful!”      He carried on so much about his little daughter’s “writing” that her eyes got bigger and bigger. Then she said, “What does it say, Daddy?”      Suddenly, Daddy went hot and cold. He didn’t know what to say or do in response to the scribbles all over the page. Then it came to him:      “It says here that you are little four-year old girl.      “It says that you really want to write.      “It says that you have tried very hard to learn and that you are learning.      “It says that you want to share your learning with your daddy.      “It says that you will grow up to be a big girl someday.      “It says that someday you will really write well.”      Her eyes were very big now as she said, “Does it say all that, Daddy?”      Yes, it surely did!—From Modern Parables, by Morris Venden.
