The Rest of the Story

Sometimes you begin to understand the "rest of the story." I came across this video by Dinesh D'Souza who was discussing the owning of slaves in America by "free" Blacks before the Civil War. Quite the eye opening statement and required further investigation.

The narrative we usually get fed is that white men are responsible for all of the world's problems, including even from "church" people, be it for being white by some groups or be it for being male from others. However, when you look beyond the narratives you begin to see a very different picture.

The fact is large numbers of free Negroes owned black slaves; in fact, in numbers disproportionate to their representation in society at large. In 1860 only a small minority of whites owned slaves.

In her book “They Were Her Property: White Women as Slave Owners in the American South,” Stephanie E. Jones-Rogers, associate professor of history at the University of California at Berkeley, shatters the narrative that married white women were passive bystanders in the business of slavery.

Some husbands actually had to intervene to stop the brutality, and one women’s violence toward their slaves drove her husband to abandon her and take his slaves with him. Others forced female slaves to work in brothels in New Orleans, something Jones-Rogers says has been ignored by historians.

What you really have in this all is that people of whatever color or sex will mistreat and abuse others when given the chance. And to deny history to push a narrative for whatever gain you hope to obtain by it is also a moral violation.
