The Lord's Supper was a celebration which caused a great deal of controversy during the Reformation. It was a major source of division between the Lutheran and the Reformed traditions. Adventists are much closer to Calvin than Luther on the substance/significance of the bread and wine. Calvin believed that the Lord's Supper should be celebrated on a weekly basis. "Open communion" as practiced by Adventists was replaced by an examination of each participant. Calvin's desire for weekly celebration was overruled by one which Adventists follow i.e., 4 times a year. Examination of candidates for communion would require a degree of accountability and openness with which many Adventists would not be comfortable.
