Family Tragedy

Last night my brother-in-law was murdered just outside his home. He lived in a bad neighborhood in El Salvador and is to believed to have been involved with street gangs there. It may have been gang-related. He was my wife's brother.

He was raised in the Adventist church and at one time was studying to become a pastor. He just got out of jail a few weeks ago and was living with his girlfriend and their 2 year-old daughter. His mother, sisters and extended family are all devote Adventists. He ws the black sheep in the family.

There were 18 gang-related murders in the city of San Salvador last night. My brother-in-law was one of them. He died of a single gun shot wound to the head. A friend of his was killed in a simular way just a few days ago.

I have been concerned for a few years that he was involved in gang activity and had written his mother various letters regarding it. I had hoped he would come to repentance and change his ways before it would come to this. It is indeed tragic. Some of his friends have already informed the family they well be getting vengence of his death. That only means more gang-related deaths.

Lord, we thank You for Your mercy to us as we struggle on this sinful earth. We are comforted to know that Your heart breaks as death continues to destroy the jewel that You created. We long to get Your word to those who have yet to hear of the saving power of Jesus, and we remember Shane's family as they are grieving over the loss of this young man. We ask that You would be a real presence with each one of them and comfort them with the peace that only You can provide.

We also ask that You would touch his two-year old and give that child a heart for You. Father, we ask these things so that in all this madness, You will still be glorified, and we ask in Jesus' name. Amen.

The nation's leading newpaper has identified him as a suspected gang member.

My wife's mother is taking it quite hard. The funeral was today. We put a box of stuff together for the little girl and sent it off this morning and sent them $100 for funeral expense which is what they said they needed.

Some good news among the sorrow. My brother-in-law's girlfriend - the mother of his child - was baptised this past Sabbath. She had attended an evangelistic crusade sometime before but had never made a decision for Christ.
