Dr. Shane Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 Bill O'Reilly did a segment on this story tonight. Hundreds Mourn Priest Killed by Drunk Driver
Quote:
There were hundreds of mourners in attendance for the wake of Msgr. William Costello on Friday. The catholic priest, known for his singing voice and jovial manner, was killed when he was hit by a drunk driver while out taking a stroll. He was 79 years old. His alleged murderer Karen Fisher, 42, faces charges that include driving while intoxicated.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, as reported by MADD, over 16,000 lives were lost in the US in 2004 due to alcohol related accidents. That was 39% of all traffic fatalities. Not one of these people had to die like that. I think it is clear that not enough is being done to stop drunk driving and not enough attention is being brought to the issue. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Amelia Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 What do you suggest Shane? Even taking their license, insurance and car away doesn't keep the idiots off the road. Kountzer Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 Texas started using the point system about 1 year ago. Under this system, a 1st time dwi results in a $1,000.00 fine, along with a $1,000.00 a year surcharge, paid annually for 3 years. A 2nd dwi results in a $1,500.00 surcharge paid annually for 3 years. The charges are cumulative. For example a driver could pay $1,000 as a result of their first DWI and an additional $1,500 for their second DWI, paying a total of $2,500 annually. The offender would also have their license revoked, and in order to get it re instated they would have to pay at least a $250.00 reinstatement admin. fee. They would also have to pay to take a alcohol and substance abuse counseling class, about $100.00, and probably would be given a breathalizer ignition setup with will cost them money. all in all that adds up to a lot of money. yet, I still see people driving down the street with open beer cans and bottles in their hands and laps. Oh well.. Quote I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs. Frederick Douglass
Dr. Shane Posted July 25, 2006 Author Posted July 25, 2006 Ignition lock awaits Ontario drunk drivers That is a start. Businesses that serve alcohol should also have breathalyzer machines that customers must use before leaving. Those recieving DWIs should have to reveal where they were drinking so any business establishments allowing them to leave intoxicated could be fined. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Beryl Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 "breathalyzer machines that customers must use before leaving." Unfortunately, the alcohol blood level continues to rise after they have finished drinking.
