List of items banned on planes following terror plot

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is advising that no liquids or gels of any kind will be permitted in carry-on baggage, or carried through the security checkpoint or carried onboard aircraft. Those items are instead allowed in checked baggage, which passengers cannot access in flight.

Prohibited items include:

LIQUIDS:

-- all beverages

-- contact lense solution

-- shampoo

-- perfume

-- sun tan lotion

-- creams

-- tooth paste

-- hair gel

-- and other items of similar consistency.

Exceptions include baby formula and medicines, which must be presented for inspection at the checkpoint.

Exactly. My husband got stuck in Atlanta and told me all about losing his after shave and shampoo...

Hopefully by now he is on his way to Phoenix. He was delayed for about a day and mentioned lineups that were "5 miles long"

Two gals that I worked with today on a special project came up here from so.cal. They were to fly back tonight. At least now they can prepare for a duration. One of the ladies said that the last time she flew up here for an overnight she got stuck for a week because of 911. We told her to stop flying and drive.ROFL

Hope the flight attendants are going to have contact lens solution available on board for if someone has an issue with a lens and needs to take it out... Seems pretty silly to me: about as silly as taking nail clippers from people.

British authorities said Thursday they thwarted a terrorist plot to simultaneously blow up 10 aircraft heading to the U.S. using explosives smuggled in hand luggage, averting what police described as "mass murder on an unimaginable scale."

Maybe there is a reason for the seemingly senseless restrictions. Maybe there is someone out there that has a fool proof way to protect those on these international flights. Wish for the safety of so many at stake, they would share it instead of just criticism. Glad someone is minding the store even if it is inconvenient. Could have been his rubber ducky (tic)... I can't remember what Russ said it was that was bothering the guy, but he was concerned because of his malady. From what he described it was liquids that they were confiscating

He said that people were crying because everything was so chaotic and he was happy to finally be in Phoenix where traffic was flowing

I wonder why London is such a hot spot, seems even more so than the States. It seems that they've had this problem for years, at their airports and tube stations

Bonnie, what stopped these attacks? It wasn't someone being picked up at the airport gate with something on their person, it was good investigative and police work catching the plotters well before they got to the airport. The bottom line is, if we're depending on the screeners in the airport to protect us, it's probably already too late, because that system is just always going to not be powerful enough. All that these bans accomplish is massive inconvenience for the thousands of innocent travellers (and possibly the impression that 'something is being done'). The real work of stopping terrorists is doen exactly as it was successfully done in this case - and all kudos to the police and security forces who did the excellent work - not by keeping nail clippers off planes.

Just what explosive liquid is there that is drinkable?

We carried water bottles on the airplane, and were asked to take drinks from the bottles, which we did....

Nitro? ...a good jossel, and the counter explodes...

From what I understand from reports on the radio, the police and security forces were able to stop 24 of the 29 suspected individuals. It may very well be that the other 5 were stopped in the preboarding security checks.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it's not the beverages that are the problem, but the containers. They are throwing everything away because they don't know what's inside the containers. The sports drink that they confiscated had been poured out, and replaced with a component for a liquid explosive. The plan was that several people would be on the same plane, each carrying one ingredient for the liquid explosive, thus eliminating the probability of detection. The terrorists on the plane would then meet up in the lavoratory, and mix the components together to form the deadly cocktail.

"peroxide-based solution".... Ok, all you chemists....what is the name of an explosive that is "peroxide-based solution"??? I admit to not being up on explosives and what they are based upon chemically, but surely there are names to these "peroxide-based solutions"??? Nitroglycerin is NOT a peroxide based solution...it's base is glycerin...

Doctors???? Any chemists out there????? Someone whose a bomb expert?

Sounds good to me, stop the security checks at the airport. As long as it may be just for show, let's just consider that they have done all they can and allow the lax conditions we had before. Then of course the complaint they would hear is they should have been more watchful and detected what may be in a carry-on . That would only come after it all went poof. It may be obvious to some that want to do damage, the many things they could take thru checkout without fear of confiscation are the very things they can you to devise means to blow it to eternity

I would rather be inconvenienced than dead.

I bet those five that got away are running scared now. Would never occur to them to try to board a plane without all these items.

Why fingernail clippers are confiscated, I haven't a clue. Maybe there is no reason, maybe it might be for show,or just maybe it might be something that those that are sure they know the answers to this haven't thought of either.

Right now the bans are a knee jerk reaction. Expect revisions to the list later on when they sort out what is restrictions are sane and what are insane. Right now the clear liquid the radicals were trying to use was an extremely flammable clear liquid that could be set off by a low electric current from batteries and wires. Plan was to set the passenger cabin in flames at 30 thousand feet.

Here in the USA many airlines do not serve food anymore. If we want to eat on long flights we have to bring our own food. While they do serve drinks on board they do so only twice on long flights. I expect they will loosen restrictions on sealed drinks like canned soda etc later. Right now the restrictions are ridicules. Problem is they gave no notice. All of a sudden you could not have those items and people were coming to the airport not prepared for those kinds of restrictions.

Also the USA government has said that there is no evidence any plot like this was planed from this side of the Atlantic. Only international flights were targeted anyway and not domestic flights. Why target everyone?

The liquid these guys were using had a smell to them. Water has no smell. Come on guys. It does not take a rocket scientist to tell water from the kind of liquid these terrorists were going to be using. If they are going to take it away at least gives the material a whiff to see if it is water or not.

Expect the rules to be relaxed in a month or two.

If all of these terrorist suspects are now locked up, why are they NOW introducing these tough security restrictions?

Why not during the months that they were looking for these guys? (I read somewhere that it took them 9 months to track them down.)

It just doesn't make sense.

And all this from the government which murdered an innocent Brazilian citizen...and wounded another innocent Muslim last year during a raid based on false information...

And at a time when we desperately need to be distracted from the disaster that our governments' military adventures abroad have become...

They would find that this is what the London subway bombers used - acetone + peroxide + sulfuric acid combined in a particular way and it is EXTREMELY dangerous to make

Since the goal here was to bring down an airliner I doubt they cared about how dangerous it is too make!

How come they didn't ban liquids LONG ago, why now? This is all so ridiculous. It's all just a nice plan to instill more fear into people. And the people just accept it.
