A quote I heard on the news last night.. from an Israeli

"If the muslims would put away their bombs there would be no more killing in the middle east. If Israel wold put away their bombs, there would be no more Israel"

Thought that was profond..

YET...

IF THE WORLD courts gave Texas to Mexico and all the land and homes there, I would expect the Texans, would would be a people with out a country, to fight back for what was taken from them, it woud be more complex if Mexico had bigger guns and was backed by Russia...

One countries terrorist are sill another countries Freedom Fighters...

I think a better analogy would be the American Civil War. If the North would have let the South secede, there would have been no war.

In the opinion of many, the South had a right to secede and be self-governing as much as Israel has a right to be its own state and be self-governing. While it is accurate that the UN created Israel, it is more accurate to say that they gained their independance through war, much the same way many nations have gained their independance - including the United States.

A common saying, but false.

Hizbollah does not allow freedom in the areas where they rule. Hamas is a terrorist organization, which has demonstrated that they have no intention of providing civil government, and thereby fostering freedom.

Terrorists, left to themselves, continue to produce terror, as seen in Gaza previous to hostilities. Freedom fighters, left to themselves, go back to their farms and factories, and live free.

I'm quite surpised to see such a simplistic comment from you Ed. Very often Terrorists leave armed conflict when their political objectives are met.

Its undeniable that Yishak Shamir was a terrorist but he later became PM of Israel. He won the freedom of his people and therefore terrorism was no longer necessary.

Nelson Mandela, it took 27 years but his objctives were met.

Members of the IRA are now sharing power in NI. Many of their objectives have been met. There was considerable compromise though.

Is it really going to be any different in the Middle East.

Unfortunately, the history of the Middle East directly contradicts you. Hizbollah demanded the withdrawal of Israel from Lebanon. Israel withdrew, and Hizbollah began lobbing rockets into Israel.

Hamas wanted Israel to withdraw from Gaza. Israel withdrew. Hamas lobbed rockets from Gaza, and Gaza dexcended into internal chaos, since Hamas knew how to terrorize, but not to govern.

If you're referring to the objective of exterminating Israel, well, that's not amenable to compromise.

The obvious point would be that all the objectives of the terrorists had not been realised. Hizbollah did not simply want Israel out of Lebabon...again you are being simplistic!

The IRA wanted the British out of Ireland. That was their mantra for years. It was their battlecry to rally the troops. That has not happened but there has been a political settlement of sorts. Of Course the "Real IRA" tried to continue the fight but there was no support from the grass roots.

The Terrorist groups in the Mid East are not as dumb as the commercial media/Bush Admin tries to portay them. They would settle for a lot less than the destruction of Israel. To pretend otherwise is to not really understand the dynamics of the Middle-East. The destruction of Israel would mean the destruction of their own communities. No terrorist organisation exists without the support of its local community.
