A chorus of Democrats is urging President Joe Biden to loosen the restrictions on Ukraine's use of US-provided weapons to strike deep inside Russia. Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen on Wednesday became the latest senior lawmaker to call for the restrictions to be lifted. Democratic Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Ben Cardin also released a statement calling for the restrictions to be eased in light of "Vladimir Putin's relentless attacks on Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure." The Ukrainian government has repeatedly made the appeal but the Biden administration has expressed concern about the potential for escalation. A US official told CNN this week that US intelligence shows that Russia has moved a number of assets outside of the reach of long-range strikes.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned NATO alliance leaders that a move to lift restrictions on Ukraine's use of longer-range Western missiles to strike deep inside his country would be considered an act of war. "This will mean that NATO countries — the United States and European countries — are at war with Russia. And if this is the case, then, bearing in mind the change in the essence of the conflict, we will make appropriate decisions in response to the threats that will be posed to us," Putin said Thursday. South Korea warns it can send arms to Ukraine South Korea warned Tuesday it could consider supplying weapons to Ukraine in response to North Korea allegedly dispatching troops to Russia, as both North Korea and Russia denied the movements. Why this matters: South Korea’s statement was apparently meant to pressure Russia against bringing in North Korean troops for its war against Ukraine. North Korean troops in Russian uniforms are heading toward Ukraine, US says Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Wednesday that North Korean troops wearing Russian uniforms and carrying Russian equipment are moving toward Ukraine, in what he called a dangerous and destabilizing development. Recent developments: It began with U.S. President Joe Biden reversing a longstanding policy by granting Kyiv permission to deploy American longer-range missiles inside Russian territory and ended with Moscow striking Ukraine with a new experimental ballistic weapon that has alarmed the international community and heightened fears of further escalation.   NATO and Ukraine have scheduled emergency talks slated for Tuesday, the alliance said. The meeting will be held at the request of Ukraine and will convene at the level of ambassadors. Ukraine’s parliament also canceled a session as security was tightened in the city. Lawmakers said there was a credible threat of an attack on government buildings.   Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Saturday he was confident the war could be ended in 2025. “There are appropriate steps for this, they are included in our peace formula,” he told journalists at the Grain from Ukraine international conference in Kyiv. “We realize that Russia will not take all these steps. But there is a U.N. charter and we hope that all our steps based on the U.N. charter will be supported by our partners.”
