Genesis 2:16-17, And the Lord God commanded the man saying,

"Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die."

Genesis 3:22, Then the Lord God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever"-

The snake stated that they would become like God. They looked at the garden, and decided that they wanted to see what kind of a world they could created. So, God allowed them to create their own world. As they did not have the power to create life, their world naturally contained death. Life outside of God does not exist.
