From what i think I remember about these folks they rejected the Talmud, rejected any prophet after Moses, accepted only the 1st five books of the Old Testament and rejected life after death both the spiritual existence after death and the resurrection of the body. 

Despite these difference's Jesus treats the woman at the well with respect and doesn't attack her beliefs or condemn her for living with a man not her husband. I think the author is right, more study into the Samaritans would be appropriate.
