New revelations in the 2020 election-focused indictments of former President Trump came as a shock even to former members of the House Jan. 6 committee, who expect there will be more where that came from, Axios' Andrew Solender reports. Why it matters: Special counsel Jack Smith and Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis have been afforded more time, latitude and leverage to pursue key Trump inner-circle members who evaded the committee. "The Jan. 6 committee succeeded in collecting and digesting a huge amount of factual information," Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) told Axios, but the federal indictment unsealed this month had "several quoted statements that were definitely new to me." "There were, of course, new pieces of information," said Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.). "Principally from witnesses who refused to appear before our committee and for whom we did not have the ability to compel attendance." Yes, but: The lawmakers said the indictments ultimately reinforce the conclusions drawn by the committee, which voted to refer Trump to the Justice Department on several criminal charges at the end of its final hearing. The charges included obstruction of an official proceeding and conspiracy to defraud the U.S., both of which were included in the federal indictment. Some also argued that the panel's hearings spurred the DOJ to ramp up their probe, a claim backed by Washington Post reporting that found the FBI resisted investigating Trump's role in Jan. 6 for more than a year. House Speaker Mike Johnson's (R-La.) decision to release 44,000 hours of security footage from Jan. 6 has triggered a new wave of conspiracy theories from pro-Trump actors seeking to rewrite the history of the Capitol riot. Why it matters: Ahead of the midterms, many Republicans accused the now-defunct House Jan. 6 committee of exploiting the insurrection for political purposes — arguing that the country should move forward, not look back. Now, it's former President Trump and his allies — including members of Congress — who are intent on re-litigating the deadly assault on the Capitol, including by "investigating the investigators." For Democrats whose 2024 messaging relies on painting their Republican opponents as "MAGA extremists," the revisionist history around Jan. 6 may as well be an in-kind campaign contribution. Driving the news: Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Rep. Troy Nehls (R-Texas) are among the GOP lawmakers who have called for an investigation into the Jan. 6 committee, citing footage of Trump supporters walking peacefully past Capitol Police officers. Lee and Greene promoted a baseless conspiracy theory on X suggesting that one Jan. 6 participant was an undercover federal agent caught on camera flashing a badge. In reality, the "badge" was a vape — and the "agent" was Jan. 6 defendant Kevin Lyons, who stole a photo from former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-Calif.) office and has been sentenced to four years in prison. "Criminal referrals must be written and prosecutions MUST happen under a Trump DOJ. I've said it all along, MAGA did not do this," Greene wrote in a post later edited to remove an image and reference to Lyons. Approximately 140 police officers were assaulted that day. Five officers died in the days and weeks after the riot. At a rally this month, the Republican front-runner referred to Jan. 6 defendants as "hostages" and stood saluting during a song performed by the J6 Prison Choir. A state judge ruled Friday that Trump could stay on the ballot in Colorado, but formally determined the former president "engaged in insurrection" on Jan. 6. As his lawyers argued against a gag order in his federal election interference case today, Trump reposted a former aide's claim that "everything you've been told about January 6th is bullsh!t" — and that the people who "framed Trump ... will pay."

Photo: Jon Cherry/Getty Images Three years on from Jan. 6, the GOP establishment's shock, shame and fury at the Trump-inspired mob that ransacked the Capitol has melted away in favor of realpolitik and revisionist history. Why it matters: President Biden is preparing a full-court press — starting with two anniversary speeches and his first campaign ad of 2024 — to remind Americans of former President Trump's actions after the 2020 election. Biden's bet is that when a binary choice is presented in November, voter fears about the threat Trump poses to democracy will outweigh their concerns about the economy and the border. How much that message will resonate three years after Jan. 6 — especially against a united Republican Party willing to go to bat for its rejuvenated leader — will be tested on the campaign trail over the next 10 months. How we got here: The GOP's journey of reconciliation with Trump and Jan. 6 — to the point where 34% of Republicans recently polled falsely believe the FBI organized the Capitol attack — can be broken down into five key inflection points. 1. Impeachment: Despite many Republicans publicly blaming Trump for inciting the riot, the Senate voted not to convict him — and thus bar him from future office — in his post-presidency trial. Several GOP senators who voted to acquit Trump, including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Sen. Mar-a-Lago mission: On Jan. 13, 2021, then-House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) called on Trump to "accept his share of responsibility" for the mob's violence. Weeks later, McCarthy visited the former president in Florida — a key rehabilitative step and recognition that Trump's staying power with the GOP base couldn't be ignored. 3. Bipartisan Jan. 6 commission: In May 2021, Republican senators filibustered the establishment of a 9/11-style commission to investigate Jan. 6 — with McConnell casting the probe as "extraneous" and "political." 4. House Jan. 6 committee: In July 2021, then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) created what quickly became an electrifying foil for Republicans convinced that Democrats were "weaponizing" Jan. 6 for partisan gain. 5. Prosecution: Trump's first two indictments created a Republican rallying effect, rescuing his image at a moment he was uniquely vulnerable after the disappointing midterms. By the time Trump was indicted in August on charges of trying to overturn the 2020 election, much of the GOP had grown to view the "weaponization" of justice as worse than any of his actions related to Jan. 6. The big picture: Despite their full-throated embrace of Trump, most Republican leaders would be content to never discuss Jan. 6 again. The realities of the 2024 campaign — Biden's relentless messaging, insurrection-related legal battles and Trump's insistence on re-litigating that "beautiful day" — make that impossible.
