Neil D Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 President Bush said Thursday the Democrats want to cut and run from Iraq, while he and his fellow Republicans will do what it takes to win the war on terror. "Five years after 9/11, the worst attack on American homeland in our history, the Democrats offer nothing but criticism, obstructionism and endless second guessing," Bush said in a speech at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex. "That's right," replied someone in the friendly audience of about 2,000 gathered at a luncheon fund-raiser for Gov. Bob Riley's re-election campaign. "The party of FDR and the party of Harry Truman has become the party of cut and run," Bush said to applause. Republicans, he said, "see the stakes. We understand the nature of the enemy. We know that the enemy wants to attack us again. We will not wait to respond to the enemy. We're not going to wait for them to attack us in order to respond. We will fight them wherever they make a stand. We will settle for nothing less than victory." The president's toughly worded speech, one of the harshest he's made this campaign season, was given with an eye toward the Nov. 7 elections, in which public concern over Iraq may help Democrats regain control in Congress. Bush spent part of his remarks urging Riley's re-election on Nov. 7, but most of his 40-minute speech was a dogged defense of the 3½-year war in Iraq and criticism of Democrats who oppose the war or how it is being waged. "Now's the time for the United States of America to lay the foundation of peace, to confront the challenge we have square on, to protect our country, to do our duty, so that generations will look back and say, `Thank God this generation of Americans was willing to serve and serve strong,'" said Bush, who received at least nine standing ovations during his speech. Riley, who introduced the president, reflected the war on terror theme when he said, "Ladies and gentleman, this is exactly the kind of man I would want to lead our country in a time of war." People paid $250, $500 or $1,000 to attend the luncheon, which was expected to raise as much as $1 million for Riley's re-election campaign. Bush called Riley one of the nation's finest governors and credited him with creating an environment that spurred economic growth in Alabama, which now has a jobless rate of 3.5 percent. source Hmmmmm....Democrates are the "cut and run party" ...This said from a man whose christian principles include duping to the american people, playing on thier fears, fabricating excuses for the war ....Oh well... Dr. Shane Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 First, I don't like cheap shots, calling names or repeating partisan talking points. Now I thought that Charles Rangel (D-NY) said if Democrats win control of Congress he will make sure that funding for the Iraq War is cut off. Isn't that "cut and run"? I thought that is what all the anti-war Democrats wanted. Asfar as fear-mongering goes... I think a lot of that is going on each side. Democrats are pointing out how the Iraq War has increased the terror threat. Isn't that fear-mongering? If not, is it suppose to be comforting? Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... In my opinion, it's one thing to use the fears of a group of people to manipulate thier thinking to do what you want...It's another thing for a person to ask that same group what the prudent thing to do and lead the way to accomplish the goal. The motive of the first example is selfish, while the motive of the latter is for the group as a whole. What we, Americans, have lost, in this country, is the perspective of community good, aka the common good. Instead, we have let special interests of corporations, businesses, and political groups dwarf the common good of the people. We have forgotten that there are special interests out there who do look for the common good of the American people. And we have forgotten to look to them and let their voices be heard. Just my opinion... Quote Democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve. George Bernard Shaw
