Originally on loan from the State Museum at Majdanek in Poland, they were returned in 2023. The following year, 4,000 shoes joined our permanent collection. Follow their journey to the Museum. https://engage.ushmm.org/20250714MKTNEWE01-StayConnected-Shoe-Installation_20250714MKTNEWE01-StayConnected-Shoe-Installation-V4.html? ps:When I visited the Holocaust Museum, in D.C. it seems like about 25/30 years ago now, The first thing I saw was all these shoes, not sure how many but it seemed like thousands of them. A pretty sobering moment for sure. Because anyone of those could've been from my father's side of my family. He lost both his parents and 3 sisters in the concentration camps, and many of his other relatives. His 4 older brothers died in the polish military fighting the Nazis. Only one brother made it, he had escape to Russia when the Nazis invaded Poland!! With books, media appearances and school visits, Ginette Kolinka has devoted the later part of her long life to sharing her firsthand insight of murderous hatred and inhumanity. Read more. Key points: Kolinka credits Spielberg for helping to precipitate her decision 30 years ago to start opening up about the mental and physical scars that she buried for decades, the survivor's guilt that tormented her, the eternal regret of goodbye kisses that she didn't get to give to her family. After the 1992 release of “Schindler’s List,” Spielberg launched a foundation to collect testimonies from Holocaust survivors. When it contacted Kolinka, she was reticent, replying that talking to her would be a waste of time, she recounts in “Return to Birkenau,” her memoir. But when its interviewer then sat down with her, in 1997, out the memories flowed, for nearly three hours. Tears, too. The foundation says it has since collected more than 60,000 testimonies and is still gathering more.
