Moderators Nan Posted September 30, 2006 Moderators Posted September 30, 2006 Sad. One of the Stans was my home for nearly 5 years, and while it did not experience the same freedom as the west, we were never under threat for practising our religion. I enjoyed my stay there very much. (Of course if a Muslim were to embrace Christianity, that was another story.) Quote
Moderators Nan Posted September 30, 2006 Moderators Posted September 30, 2006 And of course there is no problem with THE Stan!! Except that I am having problems working out if his new avatar is a real lama or a couple of people dressed up as one. Quote

Moderators LynnDel Posted October 1, 2006 Moderators Posted October 1, 2006 That llama won't Stan still for even a second. How much is it getting paid to do that exercising, I wonder? If The Stan is successful with this rigorous exercise program, pretty soon you won't be able to see him if he Stans sideways. Quote LD

Amelia Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 Tajikistan to ban gold teeth The president of Tajikistan is to ban state employees from wearing gold teeth to improve the country's image. President Emomali Rakhmonov made his decision after meeting a teacher with a mouth full of gold teeth during a visit to a school in Dushanbe. "Teachers complain about small salaries, but still wear golden teeth," he said, according to the New Region agency. "How can international organisations believe in your poverty, when the mouth of a teacher is full of gold? This is not due to our culture and traditions," he added. It's estimated that 50% of state officials will have to resign or have teeth replaced once the decree is on the stature book. Golden and silver crowns are traditionally considered a sign of affluence in Central Asian countries. Ron Lambert Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 That's the problem with socialized medicine. People with modest incomes can opt for the most expensive choice in dental care, because the state pays for it. Then some political leader complains that they make people look more affluent than they are, which makes it more difficult to get handouts from the West. I have a couple of gold fillings, and several more of the cheaper silver amalgamate fillings. Since those amalgamate fillings allow mercury to leach gradually into your system, I would like to have them replaced with gold fillings, but I can't afford it. Maybe if Hillary Clinton were elected president, and we got universal medical and dental care, I could have all my amalgamate fillings changed to gold at government expense. As for the affluent look--there are ceramic caps and fillings that can be used for front teeth (I have a couple of ceramic fillings in my upper front teeth), which do not have to bear the chewing stress of molars. The Tajikistan government employees would then simply have to be cautioned not to smile too widely. There would probably be a law specifying just how much you can open your mouth when you smile. And of course, there would have to be a complete moratorium on yawning in public. Quote

Ron Lambert Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 I think that is a takeoff on the old Monty Python skit, "Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam." I don't get the eggs, though. Unless they're green, in which case Amelia has Dr. Seuss on the brain. Quote
