The Supreme Court dealt a setback to transgender service members on Tuesday. In an unsigned decision, the court granted an emergency request from the Trump administration to lift a nationwide injunction blocking a ban on transgender troops while litigation continues to wind through the lower courts. The policy would not only require transgender Americans to be kicked out of the military, it would also bar them from enlisting. Although the administration claims that allowing trans individuals to serve would negatively affect the military’s lethality, readiness and cohesion, the plaintiffs in these cases — and federal judges reviewing legal challenges to the policy — have disagreed. “By allowing this discriminatory ban to take effect while our challenge continues, the Court has temporarily sanctioned a policy that has nothing to do with military readiness and everything to do with prejudice,” LGBTQ rights groups Lambda Legal and the Human Rights Campaign Foundation said in a statement.

The US Supreme Court yesterday limited federal judges' power to issue nationwide injunctions, allowing President Donald Trump to enforce his executive order restricting birthright citizenship in parts of the country. The 6-3 ruling, split along ideological lines, did not address the constitutionality of such restrictions. Lower courts now must decide how to revise their injunctions accordingly. Supreme Court clears the way for deportation to South Sudan of several immigrants with no ties there The Supreme Court on Thursday cleared the way for the deportation of several immigrants who were put on a flight in May bound for war-ravaged South Sudan. The push comes during a sweeping immigration crackdown by the Trump administration. Read more.

Why this matters: The decision comes after the court’s conservative majority found immigration officials can quickly deport people to third countries, making clear that the South Sudan flight could complete the trip, weeks after it was detoured to a naval base in Djibouti. The majority halted an order allowing immigrants to challenge any removals to countries outside their homeland where they could be in danger.   It also reverses findings from federal Judge Brian Murphy, who said his order on those migrants still stands even after the high court lifted his broader decision. The Supreme Court majority said their June 23 decision completely halted Murphy’s ruling and rendered his decision on the South Sudan flight “unenforceable.”   Liberal justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented, saying the ruling gives the government special treatment. “Other litigants must follow the rules, but the administration has the Supreme Court on speed dial,” Sotomayor wrote. Ghislaine Maxwell

Ghislaine Maxwell, who was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for carrying out a yearslong scheme with her confidante Jeffrey Epstein to groom and sexually abuse underage girls, is urging the Supreme Court to take up her pending appeal and overturn her sex-trafficking conviction in a new brief to the court. Her attorneys claim she was covered by an agreement Epstein made with federal authorities that shielded her from prosecution. The 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against Maxwell, finding that the agreement made with prosecutors in Florida did not bind the authorities in New York. This latest request comes amid a political firestorm over the Trump administration’s handling of the Epstein files. Although Maxwell recently met with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche for questioning, those talks were not mentioned in the Supreme Court filing. House Oversight Chair James Comer has also subpoenaed Maxwell for a deposition.
