U.S. appeals court upholds Florida ban on purchase of long guns by under 21-year-olds

A U.S. appeals court has once again upheld Florida’s 2018 law barring people under age 21 from buying long guns, rejecting a challenge by the National Rifle Association. But Florida’s attorney general says that if the case is appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, his office won’t defend it.

The Supreme Court declined to rule on the constitutionality of a New York law that requires residents to have “good moral character” to carry handguns. The law defined that term as “having the essential character, temperament and judgment necessary to be entrusted with a weapon and to use it only in a manner that does not endanger oneself or others.” The court’s decision, which was a victory for New York officials and gun control groups, also left in place most of the state’s ban on carrying weapons in “sensitive” public locations, such as government buildings, schools, hospitals, stadiums and Times Square. Gun rights groups had challenged the law, claiming it was too broad.

Students from 2 Florida shootings demand the governor reject a law to lower the gun purchasing age

(AP) — Days after a deadly shooting on their campus, Florida State University students who also survived a mass shooting in Parkland in 2018 sent a letter Monday to Republican Gov. When the Supreme Court ruled in 2010 that the Second Amendment applies to local governments, some states tightened restrictions on guns and others weakened them. A new study shows that over the next 13 years, thousands more children died from firearm violence than earlier trends would have predicted — and all of the increase happened in states that had more permissive gun laws. In half of the states with strict firearm laws — California, Maryland, New York and Rhode Island — researchers noted a decrease in pediatric firearm mortality. Today, firearms are the leading cause of death among children and teens in the US.
