As the war in Iran fuels instability in oil markets, the impact is hitting drivers fast: The national average gas price has surged to $4.45 a gallon, according to AAA. Gasoline costs 50% more in the US than before the Iran war The price of a gallon of regular gasoline climbed 31 cents in the past week, spiking to an average of $4.48 per gallon Tuesday, according to AAA. Read more.

Why this matters: Many drivers were hopeful in mid-April in response to signs that the conflict could be winding down. Gasoline prices fell daily for almost two weeks. But as the war continued, the change reversed and prices began increasing again. The longer the flow of oil is constrained through the Strait of Hormuz, the higher prices will go, said Rob Smith, director of global fuel retail at S&P Global Energy.

By the numbers: The national average will be $4.48/gallon on Memorial Day, up from $3.14 last year, GasBuddy says. An estimated 45 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles over the holiday period. That's up from 44.8 million in 2025 and 42.8 million in 2019.

Prices are seeing their largest weekly drop of the year, Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at the fuel data and analysis firm GasBuddy, posted on X. 🥊 Reality check: Gas is still far above the roughly $3 that Americans were paying right before the war started. Don't expect a quick return to pre-war prices or anything close for the foreseeable future — and prices could rise again. Maybe we don't need all this oil

Retail prices for gas and diesel are both up around 30% globally year over year amid the Iran war, Goldman Sachs analysts said in a recent note. As a result, demand is dropping fast for gas, diesel, jet fuel and petrochemicals. 📉 Economists expected that "demand destruction" to trigger a big economic slowdown. But it hasn't — at least not yet. That's partly because consumers have new ways to shift away from oil. 🚙 For example: People are switching to electric vehicles in Europe and (especially) China. That's less true in the U.S., after the Trump administration stopped pushing EVs and renewables. 🇨🇳 JPMorgan analysts wrote in a research note last week: "We spent last week in China, and the most striking takeaway ... was not simply that oil demand has fallen. It was that it may have dropped by as much as 9% ... abruptly, unexpectedly and with remarkably little visible disruption." ⛽️ Between the lines: Today's energy system was built after the 1973 oil crisis, which convinced countries and businesses to improve fuel efficiency. Today's crisis could spark an even more radical shift, with the Iran war leading to "the steady decoupling of economic activity from oil consumption itself," the JPMorgan analysts wrote. Go deeper.

Highest July 4 gas in years

But it's by far the highest price heading into the July Fourth weekend since 2022, when the national average was $4.80 on the holiday itself. ⛽️ Gas price politics are tricky. The price surge during the Iran war, which started at the end of February (charted above), could hurt Republicans in November midterms. But the trajectory has been sharply downward in recent weeks, after prices peaked at $4.56 per gallon in May. 👀 What we're watching: President Trump this week issued a vague threat of "big problems" for gasoline retailers unless stations cut prices faster. Ukraine's drone attacks on refineries have hammered Russia's oil infrastructure, creating an economic shock that is increasingly visible worldwide, including in the U.S., Axios markets correspondent Matt Phillips reports. The ripple effects can now be seen in the U.S. After Russia banned exports of the fuel last week, U.S. diesel prices edged above $5 a gallon Thursday. 💥 The International Energy Agency says: "Almost every large refinery in the western part of Russia has been hit by drones. ... Attacks continued through June and into July, with many refineries being hit multiple times." Russia's traditional diesel customers — which include large emerging markets like Brazil — are turning to the U.S. for supplies. That foreign buying is helping to push up prices for Americans. Chart: Erin Davis/Axios Visuals President Trump's social media posts about the Iran war are losing their power to move oil markets, according to an analysis by Axios' Erin Davis and Ben Geman. Why it matters: Oil price changes ripple throughout the U.S. and global economies — and the conflict has brought unprecedented supply disruption. ⏱️ By the numbers: Axios tracked 269 posts on Truth Social between Feb. 28 and Aug. 19 that mentioned Iran or the Strait of Hormuz. In the five minutes after these Truth Social posts appeared, or in the five minutes after the next market open, the average change (0.73%) was almost four times higher than normal. That effect is now diminishing (charted above). Zoom out: In the early weeks, there was an "information vacuum" and high uncertainty about U.S. policy and objectives, said oil analyst Ben Cahill. Their divergence reflects a dearth of global diesel refinery capacity. 💥 That shortage has been a growing issue since Ukraine launched a highly effective drone campaign targeting Russian refineries. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has also curtailed global supplies of refined products previously exported by Gulf states. What's next: Costlier diesel will likely filter down to everyday life. Diesel accounts for 3–5% of production costs for major crops like wheat, soybeans and corn. Diesel is the key fuel for trucking, and its surge has already raised the costs of truck transportation for goods throughout the economy. Go deeper.
