Gas above $4 in 49 states

A line chart that tracks the average U.S. regular gasoline price per gallon from Jan. 1, 2020, to May 6, 2026. Prices range from a low of $1.7682 to a high of $5.0165. The series starts at $2.5854, reaches $3.3994 in March 2023 and ends at $4.536.
Data: AAA. Chart: Noah Bressner/Axios

The average price of a gallon of regular gasoline — $4.56 this morning — is up more than 50% since the Iran war began, according to AAA data.

  • Prices are above $4 in every state except Oklahoma ($3.99). D.C. is $4.61.

👀 What we're watching: Consumers have a long road ahead before prices return to the good old days of early 2026 — even if a U.S.–Iran deal is reached soon, Axios' Ben Geman writes.

  • GasBuddy's Patrick De Haan tells us some price relief would come within days of the Strait of Hormuz truly reopening.
  • It would then take until early- to mid-2027 for prices to return to prewar levels.

😳 Getaway Day gas prices

U.S. regular gasoline prices
Data: U.S. Energy Information Administration. Chart: Axios Visuals. Chart: Josephine Walker/Axios

A record number of Americans will hit the road over Memorial Day weekend — and they'll pay an average of $1.34 more per gallon at the pump compared to a year ago, Axios' Josephine Walker writes.

  • Why it matters: Holiday car trips remain popular, even as the war with Iran pushes gas prices sharply higher.

By the numbers: The national average will be $4.48/gallon on Memorial Day, up from $3.14 last year, GasBuddy says.

  • An estimated 45 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles over the holiday period. That's up from 44.8 million in 2025 and 42.8 million in 2019.

️ Signs of gas relief

A line chart that tracks average U.S. regular gasoline prices, in dollars per gallon, from Jan. 1 to May 29, 2026. Prices fell to a low of $2.7951 on Jan. 11, then climbed steadily to a peak of $4.5641 on May 21 before easing to $4.391 on May 29.
Data: AAA; Chart: Ben Geman/Axios

Pain at the pump is easing, with the U.S. average price for regular gas at $4.39 per gallon this morning, per AAA — down 16¢ over last week as the U.S. and Iran closed in on a possible deal to extend the ceasefire, Axios' Ben Geman writes.

  • Prices are seeing their largest weekly drop of the year, Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at the fuel data and analysis firm GasBuddy, posted on X.

🥊 Reality check: Gas is still far above the roughly $3 that Americans were paying right before the war started.

Don't expect a quick return to pre-war prices or anything close for the foreseeable future — and prices could rise again.

  • Even if a U.S.-Iran deal becomes official, it's not clear whether tanker owners will feel confident enough to transit the Strait of Hormuz in large numbers anytime soon.

Maybe we don't need all this oil

mail?url=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.axios.com%

Analysts are starting to wonder if the world needs less oil than what's commonly believed, Axios' Emily Peck reports.

  • Retail prices for gas and diesel are both up around 30% globally year over year amid the Iran war, Goldman Sachs analysts said in a recent note.
  • As a result, demand is dropping fast for gas, diesel, jet fuel and petrochemicals.

📉 Economists expected that "demand destruction" to trigger a big economic slowdown. But it hasn't — at least not yet.

  • That's partly because consumers have new ways to shift away from oil.

🚙 For example: People are switching to electric vehicles in Europe and (especially) China.

  • That's less true in the U.S., after the Trump administration stopped pushing EVs and renewables.

🇨🇳 JPMorgan analysts wrote in a research note last week:

  • "We spent last week in China, and the most striking takeaway ... was not simply that oil demand has fallen. It was that it may have dropped by as much as 9% ... abruptly, unexpectedly and with remarkably little visible disruption."

️ Between the lines: Today's energy system was built after the 1973 oil crisis, which convinced countries and businesses to improve fuel efficiency.

  • Today's crisis could spark an even more radical shift, with the Iran war leading to "the steady decoupling of economic activity from oil consumption itself," the JPMorgan analysts wrote.

Sticky gas prices

A set of line charts showing the change in the price of Brent crude oil after select events. It shows the change daily, from one day before the event to 100 days after. The Iran War, started on Feb. 28, 2026, spiked Brent crude prices to up to 94% higher than the pre-war baseline. This is higher than any event shown except for Iraq
Data: U.S. Energy Information Administration. Chart: Erin Davis/Axios Visuals

Even with the makings of a deal to end the Iran war, gas and airfare will take longer to return to pre-war levels — if they ever do, Axios' Alex Fitzpatrick and Erin Davis report.

  • Why it matters: Oil prices can rise quickly and dramatically when headline-grabbing events like war or hurricanes threaten global supplies. It usually takes longer for them to settle back down.

📉 Reality check: U.S. gas prices have been dropping, but they're still way above prewar levels.

  • This morning's nationwide average price per gallon of regular is $3.88. It was $3.22 a year ago.

⚖️ On Truth Social this week, President Trump ordered the Justice Department to look into customers being "gouged."

Highest July 4 gas in years

A line chart that tracks average U.S. regular gasoline prices, in dollars per gallon, daily from Jan. 1 to July 2, 2026. Prices rose from $2.8335 on Jan. 1 to a peak of $4.5641 on May 21, then fell to $3.838 on July 2.
Data: AAA. Chart: Ben Geman/Axios

The average gallon of regular gasoline costs $3.84 nationally as of this morning, Axios' Ben Geman reports from AAA data.

  • That's lower than a few weeks ago. But it's by far the highest price heading into the July Fourth weekend since 2022, when the national average was $4.80 on the holiday itself.

️ Gas price politics are tricky.

  • The price surge during the Iran war, which started at the end of February (charted above), could hurt Republicans in November midterms.
  • But the trajectory has been sharply downward in recent weeks, after prices peaked at $4.56 per gallon in May.

👀 What we're watching: President Trump this week issued a vague threat of "big problems" for gasoline retailers unless stations cut prices faster.

  • He also said a handful of "Freedom Fuel Network" gas stations around the Philly area would slash prices tomorrow.

Another reason gas stays high

Ukraine's drone attacks on refineries have hammered Russia's oil infrastructure, creating an economic shock that is increasingly visible worldwide, including in the U.S., Axios markets correspondent Matt Phillips reports.

  • The ripple effects can now be seen in the U.S. After Russia banned exports of the fuel last week, U.S. diesel prices edged above $5 a gallon Thursday.

💥 The International Energy Agency says: "Almost every large refinery in the western part of Russia has been hit by drones. ... Attacks continued through June and into July, with many refineries being hit multiple times."

  • Russia's traditional diesel customers — which include large emerging markets like Brazil — are turning to the U.S. for supplies. That foreign buying is helping to push up prices for Americans.

Charted: GOP's gas grief

A line chart showing the average price per gallon of regular gas in the U.S. between January 1 and July 14, 2026. Prices rose sharply after the start of the Iran war and fluctuated thereafter, hitting a high of $4.56 on May 21.
Data: AAA. Chart: Erin Davis/Axios Visuals

The collapse of President Trump's Iran deal is derailing Republicans' best chance to change the inflation story before midterms, Axios' Mike Zapler reports.

  • This morning's national average price per gallon, up from $3.15 a year ago, is knocking on the door of $4 again: $3.998.

Brent oil tops $100 per barrel, as tumbles for Tesla and Alphabet yank Wall Street lower

NEW YORK (AP) — Brent oil shot to its highest price since May after increased fighting in the Middle East on Thursday threatened to slow the global flow of crude. At the same time, sharp drops for two of Wall Street’s most influential companies, Alphabet and Tesla, yanked the U.S. stock market to its worst loss in a month.

🛢️ Oil markets tune out Trump

A plot showing Brent crude price changes after Donald Trump
Data: Roll Call, Financial Modeling Prep. Chart: Erin Davis/Axios Visuals

President Trump's social media posts about the Iran war are losing their power to move oil markets, according to an analysis by Axios' Erin Davis and Ben Geman.

  • Why it matters: Oil price changes ripple throughout the U.S. and global economies — and the conflict has brought unprecedented supply disruption.

⏱️ By the numbers: Axios tracked 269 posts on Truth Social between Feb. 28 and Aug. 19 that mentioned Iran or the Strait of Hormuz.

  • In the five minutes after these Truth Social posts appeared, or in the five minutes after the next market open, the average change (0.73%) was almost four times higher than normal.
  • That effect is now diminishing (charted above).

Zoom out: In the early weeks, there was an "information vacuum" and high uncertainty about U.S. policy and objectives, said oil analyst Ben Cahill.

  • Markets often "overreacted" in response, he said.

👀 What we're watching: Trump's waning power to "jawbone" oil markets has political consequences, as Democrats use energy prices as a cudgel against Republicans in the midterm elections.

️ Diesel dilemma

A line chart that tracks daily futures prices for U.S. benchmark crude oil and diesel from Aug. 20, 2024, to Aug. 20, 2026. Crude oil moves from $73.17 to $84.39, dipping to $61.77 in August 2025. Diesel rises from $95.75 to $181.55 after falling to $94.23.
Data: NYMEX, FactSet. (Continuous contract futures prices on U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude oil and New York Harbor ultra-low sulfur diesel.) Chart: Matt Phillips/Axios

Diesel futures prices have soared to roughly $100 above those of crude oil, Axios' Matt Phillips reports.

  • Their divergence reflects a dearth of global diesel refinery capacity.

💥 That shortage has been a growing issue since Ukraine launched a highly effective drone campaign targeting Russian refineries.

  • The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has also curtailed global supplies of refined products previously exported by Gulf states.

What's next: Costlier diesel will likely filter down to everyday life.

  • Diesel accounts for 3–5% of production costs for major crops like wheat, soybeans and corn.
  • Diesel is the key fuel for trucking, and its surge has already raised the costs of truck transportation for goods throughout the economy.
