Dr. Shane Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 US full of Internet addicts: study Quote: The United States could be rife with Internet addicts as clinically ill as alcoholics, an unprecedented study released suggested. Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine in Silicon Valley said their telephone survey indicated more than one of every eight US residents showed at least one sign of "problematic Internet use." So what is problematic use? I guess if it interferes with your work or homelife. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity
cricket Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 The article states that the typical Internet addict spends 30 or more hours a week on non-essential Internet use. Oh! For 30 hours of non-essential Internet usage time!! Quote
Dr. Shane Posted October 18, 2006 Author Posted October 18, 2006 I am often logged onto the Internet in the office while I do other tasks and when I am on hold on the phone I have a chance to surf around a bit. However 30 hours a weeks seems like an aweful lot to me. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity
CyberGuy Posted October 19, 2006 Posted October 19, 2006 The article states that the typical Internet addict spends 30 or more hours a week on non-essential Internet use. Oh! For 30 hours of non-essential Internet usage time!! Ok. I guess I qualify. At least I used to. LOL. You would be surprised how it adds up. A couple of hours there and a couple of hours here. It adds up quickly. I find I can browse the internet all evening long and I am not talking about just the forums. Sometimes a question comes to mind and I spend a few hours researching it until I satisfy my curiousity. The internet is like a vast library with infinite answers out there. It is a wonderful place. Amelia Posted October 19, 2006 Posted October 19, 2006 I also like to read and research on the net. I get 90% of my news from the net. So yeah, though now male I do fit into the "addict" catagory. BUT, I dont need to be online all the time. I don't panic if I cant connect and I dont have a bizarre drive to become one with the net and live my life in a cyber cell. Dr. Shane Posted October 19, 2006 Author Posted October 19, 2006 I think a lot of people that use to be so-called TV addicts have substituted the Internet for what use to be stime spent with the TV. The only problem I can see is if the Internet becomes a gambling or porno addiction or something that takes one's time away from their family or job. When it gets to the point when one has only a cyber life and not a real life, things may be out of balance. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor...
