The colorful, CD-shaped object you (a microwave) are seeing on your computer screen is the first working invisibility cloak. No really, first you see it and now it's gone. Or, that's the way it would seem if you were a microwave. The cloak deflects microwave beams as they flow around a hidden object inside, making it appear almost as if nothing were there at all. The cloak, made and tested by scientists at Duke University's Pratt School of Engineering, is a long way off from Star Trek and Harry Potter, but is shows what can be done with artificial materials. That's an important step (even if it's not going to fulfill any spying fantasies) because some of the earlier work done in this field only achieved "invisibility'' with cloaks whose electromagnetic properties that, in effect, cancel those of the object meant to be hidden. The visible light portion of the electromagnetic spectrum is of much, much shorter wavelengths. To say nothing of the mass/density/volume of larger objects than used in the experiment.
