Barbara Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 We have now started day two of Miss Em running a fever of 101.7. As soon as the clinic opens we are going to go in. She came out about 5:50am and laid down with us and I gave her some advil. But she is one hot little girl right now. As far as I can tell there is just the fever. No runny nose sore throat or other signs that she is sick. Quote .....Love others as well as you love yourself. Matt 22:39 (The Message Bible)
Barbara Posted October 25, 2006 Author Posted October 25, 2006 The Dr checked her out and her throat is a bit red, but she doesn't have strep. We just have to let this run it corse and if it gets worse I am to bring her back. Quote .....Love others as well as you love yourself. Matt 22:39 (The Message Bible)
Stan Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 Make sure she drinks plenty of water for all the water she is giving off. :) Quote If you receive benefit to being here please help out with expenses. https://www.paypal.me/clubadventist Administrator of a few websites like https://adventistdating.com

Barbara Posted October 25, 2006 Author Posted October 25, 2006 Thanks I sure hope she gets over this soon. She crawled in with me and woke me up from our naps this afternoon burning up again. This time at 102.4. So I gave her some more advil to bring back down again. Quote .....Love others as well as you love yourself. Matt 22:39 (The Message Bible)
Barbara Posted October 26, 2006 Author Posted October 26, 2006 I had a better night. about 10pm her ferver was at 103.8 This morning it is back down to 101.4 but she is now really complaining about her throat. I am going to call the clinic this morning and see if I should bring her in or wait until torrow and have the visiting DR check her out. Quote .....Love others as well as you love yourself. Dr. Shane Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 A Mexican doctor would have given you amoxi the first time. They sure are different than American doctors. Is this guy going to charge you another office visit when you go back the second time? I said a quick prayer for your little girl. Hopefully the doctor will give her something and the symptoms will go away in 8 to 20 hours. Just got to make sure she takes all the antibiotic and doesn't stop taking it until it is finished. Barbara Posted October 26, 2006 Author Posted October 26, 2006 With the clinic here at the college the Dr visit don't cost me anything. If I was to go into the Dr office how ever it would cost me a $20 copay and what ever the insurance doesn't pay. Quote .....Love others as well as you love yourself. Matt 22:39 (The Message Bible)
Pockey Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 A Mexican doctor would have given you amoxi the first time. They sure are different than American doctors. Is this guy going to charge you another office visit when you go back the second time? The Mexican doctor would give amoxicillin based on what evidence? A fever and the throat is a little red? Did the doctor do a rapid strep test? If what you say is true Shane, then Mexican doctors are contributing to the unnecessary overuse of antibiotics. Most upper respiratory infections are caused by viruses, in which case antibiotics won't do anything. Unnecessary overuse of antibiotics is poor practice. That contributes to the problem we now have of antibiotic resistant bacteria which is now a huge problem. I'm not saying what Barbara's baby has isn't bacterial. On the contrary, I would take the baby back to be rechecked, and have a rapid strep test, if that has been done or it is negative, insist on getting a throat culture, because the culture is the definitive diagnosis for a bacterial infection, such as strep. In that case, yes, she would need an antibiotic. Quote
Dr. Shane Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 Quote: then Mexican doctors are contributing to the unnecessary overuse of antibiotics Well that is probally true. Amoxi and a number of antibiotics are sold over the counter in Mexico so no doctor's presciption is needed. We have a bottle in our medicine cabinet. A throat culture sounds like it would be hard to get on a toddler. I have such a gag reflex, as does my son, it is hard for us to even let the doctor hold our toungue down to look at our throat. Are you saying an infection cannot be observed and a culture is needed to determine if it is viral or bacterial? Because our kids have never had a culture and have had numerous throat infections. Pockey Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 Quote: Are you saying an infection cannot be observed and a culture is needed to determine if it is viral or bacterial? Because our kids have never had a culture and have had numerous throat infections. Most times, a culture is not done, so that is not unusual that your kids never had a culture. The reason is, determining the difference between a viral and bacterial infection is generally a clinical one...meaning, a decision made by putting all the pieces together. For example, a bacterial infection in the throat, such as strep would present itself with fever, redness, possible pus on the tonsils, swollen lymph nodes, and ABSENCE of other symptoms like running nose, cough etc. So likely if your kids had a throat infection, they were able to determine clinically whether it was viral or bacterial without doing the culture. But there are gray areas, in which a culture is needed. What if someone had fever, sore throat, but normal looking throat, and absence of other symptoms? Then they should get a "rapid strep test" (which is not a culture), which most offices should have. This will take about 5 minutes to determine if it is strep. If the rapid is negative, likely it is viral. However, there is the possibility of a false negative test, and so one could get a throat culture, which takes several days to get the result. The throat culture basically is close to a 100% accuracy. More and more offices are carrying the rapid strep tests. The reason is is that if a strep throat is left untreated, there could be potential problems with the kidneys and heart valves from the strep infection. Quote

Barbara Posted October 26, 2006 Author Posted October 26, 2006 Well I paid the copay and went into the Peds. Dr and still the strep test is negative. If things are better by Moday with the fever we'll go back. We are still headed for Grandma House tomorrow. But Emily and I wont be going to church. We have a nice relaxing time and with Grandma's help I should be able to get some much need rest or I'll end up sick again. Quote .....Love others as well as you love yourself. Dottie Posted October 28, 2006 Posted October 28, 2006 Sure, she'll always be your baby. My baby girl was my baby until she was 23, and we adopted a little boy. Did anyone ever suggest that when your child has a fever that Tylenol and Advil _or_ Motrin can be taken concurrently, as they are medicines from different families, and act differently in the body? I've done that a lot with all the little ones that I've had. I'm glad she's feeling better. This is a good place to come to get a lot of praying done! It seems to have worked... Quote
Toni Posted October 28, 2006 Posted October 28, 2006 I hope she gets well soon! Fevers can be scary, but so important for fighting off the sickies! It's a good sign that her body is working the way it's supposed to. I try not to give any fever reducers unless it's nighttime and they are so uncomfortable that they can't sleep. I'm praying that she feels better soon! :-) Quote Toni
Barbara Posted October 28, 2006 Author Posted October 28, 2006 She went all day yesterday with out a fever and is talking up a storm couldn't get her to be quiet at all. I am so glad she feeling better. But now I am the one dealing with sickness I believe I have an ear infection. I stayed home instead of going to church with everyone else. Toni Posted October 28, 2006 Posted October 28, 2006 That's great news! I was thinking of you and praying for your little one. I'm so glad to hear she is on the mend! Now it's your turn for some prayers. I hope you feel better soon! :-) Quote Toni

puddles Posted October 28, 2006 Posted October 28, 2006 Oh bless your heart Barbara! You are such a wonderful momma! I've been praying for your little girl and will add you to my prayers as well. Glad Emily is doing better! Blessings and prayers! Quote
Dr. Shane Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 Now our little boy is running a fever but I don't imagine he caught it from your girl. He started with runny eyes and has vommitted. I'll take him to the doctor tomorrow after work unless we can't control his fever, then I'll take him before. I need to take him to the doctor and get a note since he is going to miss school. Luckly the school accepts doctor's notes from Mexico. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity
