?️ 1 for the road: Memorial Day travel surge

A column chart that shows total travelers on Memorial Day weekend from 2000 to 2025. Travel ranged from a low of 23.1 million in 2020 to a projected high of 45.1 million in 2025. Travel numbers generally increased, with a sharp drop in 2020 followed by steady recovery.
Data: AAA. Chart: Axios Visuals

Memorial Day travel is projected to beat a 20-year-old record high this year, Axios' April Rubin and Alex Fitzpatrick write from AAA data out this morning.

  • Why it matters: Americans keep breaking travel records in the post-pandemic period, either to keep making up for lost time during COVID or, now, to get ahead of potential rising prices over the next few months.

By the numbers: 45.1 million people are projected to travel at least 50 miles from home.

  • That's an increase of 1.4 million travelers from last year and surpasses the record from 2005.

? Buckle up

Godspeed to those flying or driving this Memorial Day weekend.

  • ✈️ Both AAA and the FAA are predicting record high travel over the next few days, despite economic uncertainty.

? More than 45 million people are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home over the long weekend, per AAA's projections.

  • That would beat 2005's record of 44 million.

⛈️ Thunderstorms in parts of the country could cause air delays and hazardous driving.

  • And the record air travel will stress an air traffic control system already showing signs of buckling under pressure.

Remembering the Sacrifice

Memorial Day, explained

Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the US military. Originally called Decoration Day, its origins trace to the aftermath of the Civil War, when communities across the country began holding local ceremonies to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers. The first national commemoration was held at Arlington National Cemetery on May 30, 1868.

Over time, the holiday has come to be both a solemn day of remembrance and the unofficial start of summer. Congress moved it from May 30 to the final Monday in May in 1971, creating what is now one of the biggest travel and cookout weekends of the year in the United States.

Today, traditions include visiting cemeteries, attending parades, and the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 pm, when Americans are asked to pause and honor the fallen.

🎖️ Oldest Pearl Harbor survivor

On Memorial Day, Freeman Johnson, the country's oldest living survivor of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, is keeping the memory of the air raid alive after nearly 85 years.

  • Why it matters: Johnson, who turned 106 in March, is one of just 11 remaining survivors of the surprise strike, which killed just over 2,400 Americans and propelled the United States into World War II.

Johnson — who lives in Centerville, Mass. — was far below deck helping repair one of the boilers of the USS St. Louis. By the time he was topside, the St. Louis, a light cruiser, had evaded midget submarines and safely set out to sea.

  • "While all the rigmarole was going on topside, I was inside a steam drum. Couldn't see anything, absolutely nothing," Johnson said. "I was just a sailor, just a swabbie."

Go deeper.
