Members phkrause Posted September 24, 2024 Author Members Posted September 24, 2024 Boeing strike Boeing said Monday it has raised its offer to the International Association of Machinists union in an effort to end the strike by 33,000 union members that has now entered its second week. The new offer would give members a 30% raise over the four-year life of the contract, including an immediate 12% raise, up from the 25% in overall pay increases and an immediate 11% raise that membership voted almost unanimously against on September 12, just before walking off the job at Boeing plants on the West Coast. The union issued a statement saying it was reviewing the new offer, though some striking employees say they will vote against it until their demands are met. Members phkrause Posted October 1, 2024 Author Members Posted October 1, 2024 Dockworkers at ports from Maine to Texas go on strike, a standoff risking new shortages PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Dockworkers at ports from Maine to Texas began walking picket lines early Tuesday in a strike over wages and automation that could reignite inflation and cause shortages of goods if it goes on more than a few weeks. https://apnews.com/article/port-strike-ila-dockworkers-begins-e5468e760f46a64e4322d1702beb1f72? Port workers strike Tens of thousands of longshore workers went on strike at midnight against the nation's East and Gulf Coast ports, choking off the flow of many of the nation's imports and exports in what could become America's most disruptive work stoppage in decades. Some 50,000 members of the International Longshoremen's Association could participate in the strike, the union said, citing demands for better wages and "protections against automation." Depending on the length of the strike, it could result in shortages of consumer goods, which could lead to price hikes. It could also mark a setback for the economy, which has shown signs of recovery from pandemic-induced supply chain disruptions that resulted in a spike in inflation. Why it matters: The future is tough to fend off forever. The ports responsible for moving goods around the world have used tech to get more efficient and productive for decades. Port strike Thousands of striking port workers will return to their jobs today after the International Longshoremen's Association reached a tentative agreement on Thursday with negotiators. The 50,000 members of the union working at ports from Maine to Texas had been on strike since Tuesday over wages and concerns that increased automation at the ports could cost union jobs. President Joe Biden praised the tentative wage deal. "I congratulate the dockworkers from the ILA, who deserve a strong contract after sacrificing so much to keep our ports open during the pandemic," he said. For the Biden administration, the motivation to limit the economic fallout was amplified by the fact that a lengthy strike could have caused shortages of some US imports and further soured Americans' views of the economy in the last weeks before the election. Members phkrause Posted October 9, 2024 Author Members Posted October 9, 2024 Boeing strike Boeing and the union that represents 33,000 striking employees at the company say negotiations between the two have broken down and no new talks are scheduled. "The union made non-negotiable demands far in excess of what can be accepted if we are to remain competitive as a business," said Stephanie Pope, the CEO of Boeing's commercial airplanes unit. "Further negotiations do not make sense at this point and our offer has been withdrawn," she said. Members of the International Association of Machinists have been on strike for nearly a month over wage increases and the loss of pension plans, grinding operations at the troubled manufacturer to a halt. Members phkrause Posted October 14, 2024 Author Members Posted October 14, 2024 Boeing strike A month-long strike at Boeing has cost the company and its workers nearly $5 billion, a new analysis shows. That massive tab highlights the difficulties facing the aircraft maker, once synonymous with American quality. Instead, it has faced a string of bad news in recent years, from fatal crashes to increased regulatory scrutiny to the strike by 33,000 workers that started on September 13 that ground operations to a near halt. Not a single plane has been worked on at the company's production facility in Everett, Washington, since the union members walked off the job, triggering the first strike at the company in 16 years. Boeing also announced last week it will be laying off 10% of its workforce — about 17,000 employees — over the next several months. Members phkrause Posted October 26, 2024 Author Members Posted October 26, 2024 ✈️ Boeing's strike shocker Boeing factory workers voted to remain on strike and reject a new contract that included pay increases of 35% over four years. Why it matters: The strike — which started six weeks ago — has crippled production of Boeing's best-selling jets during a year when the aerospace giant was already grappling with a battered reputation, Axios' Rebecca Falconer writes. Workers told reporters that the loss of a pension plan that was axed about a decade ago was a sticking point. Boeing insists the plan is not coming back. Boeing strike Around 33,000 workers at Boeing will remain on the picket line after union members rejected an offer from the company in a vote on Wednesday. The membership of the International Association of Machinists voted 64% against the deal. While that was less than the 95% that rejected an earlier offer, it left the vote far short of the simple majority needed to end the strike. Many members are refusing Boeing's offer until it guarantees the return of traditional pension plans. Membership narrowly gave up the pension in 2014 after the company threatened to build the 737 Max and 777X at non-union facilities. Financial analysts say Boeing urgently needs a deal: According to an estimate from Standard & Poor's, the strike is costing the company $1 billion a month on top of its ongoing losses. Members phkrause Posted April 29, 2025 Author Members Posted April 29, 2025 More than 50,000 Los Angeles County workers go on strike The two-day strike across the nation’s most populous county was initiated in response to failed negotiations with the county for a new contract after the last one expired in March, union leaders say. It is set to last until 7 p.m. on Wednesday. During this time, libraries, some health care clinics, beach bathrooms, and public service counters at the Hall of Administration are expected to be closed. Services in the medical examiner's office and public works department may also be affected, the county says. Read more. Why this matters: The Service Employees International Union Local 721 union, which represents more than 55,000 workers, has accused the county of 44 labor law violations during contract negotiations, including surveillance and retaliation against workers engaging in union activity and contracting out positions represented by the union. “This is the workforce that got LA County through emergency after emergency,” said union leader David Green in a statement. “That’s why we have had it with the labor law violations and demand respect for our workers.” LA County says it's facing “unprecedented stresses” on its budget, including a tentative $4 billion settlement of thousands of childhood sexual assault claims, a projected $2 billion in impacts related to the LA wildfires in January, and the potential loss of hundreds of millions in federal funding. “We do not want to negotiate ourselves into a structural deficit — which could lead to layoffs and service reductions,” spokesperson Elizabeth Marcellino said.
