Boeing said Monday it has raised its offer to the International Association of Machinists union in an effort to end the strike by 33,000 union members that has now entered its second week. The new offer would give members a 30% raise over the four-year life of the contract, including an immediate 12% raise, up from the 25% in overall pay increases and an immediate 11% raise that membership voted almost unanimously against on September 12, just before walking off the job at Boeing plants on the West Coast. The union issued a statement saying it was reviewing the new offer, though some striking employees say they will vote against it until their demands are met.

Tens of thousands of longshore workers went on strike at midnight against the nation's East and Gulf Coast ports, choking off the flow of many of the nation's imports and exports in what could become America's most disruptive work stoppage in decades. Some 50,000 members of the International Longshoremen's Association could participate in the strike, the union said, citing demands for better wages and "protections against automation." Depending on the length of the strike, it could result in shortages of consumer goods, which could lead to price hikes. It could also mark a setback for the economy, which has shown signs of recovery from pandemic-induced supply chain disruptions that resulted in a spike in inflation.

"The union made non-negotiable demands far in excess of what can be accepted if we are to remain competitive as a business," said Stephanie Pope, the CEO of Boeing's commercial airplanes unit. Thousands of Amazon drivers went on strike Thursday in four states over concerns about their wages and benefits. Members of the Teamsters union are striking at seven facilities, and even though the Teamsters claim to represent 7,000 Amazon workers nationwide, that accounts for less than 1% of the company's US workforce. Amazon said the strike will not affect holiday deliveries during the busy shipping season. But by walking out the week before Christmas and Hanukkah, the Teamsters hope to apply maximum pressure to Amazon, and perhaps convince some of its customers to shop elsewhere for last-minute gifts.

Starbucks strike

A strike that began last week against Starbucks reached nine states on Sunday, according to the union representing the workers. The Starbucks Workers United said baristas in Missouri, New Jersey and New York began their strike Sunday after locations in Colorado, Ohio and Pennsylvania joined the strike Saturday. Workers walked off the job on Friday in Chicago, Los Angeles and Seattle, where Starbucks is headquartered and opened its first location. The union has said the strike could reach “hundreds of stores” by Christmas Eve — although that would only be a small portion of Starbucks’ more than 10,000 company-operated stores.

Costco strike

Members of the Teamsters union have authorized a strike against Costco on February 1 unless they reach a deal with the warehouse retailer before the current contract expires on January 31. The union said 18,000 Costco workers are set to go on strike at 56 of the company's warehouse stores spread across five states. That's after 85% of members voted to authorize a strike. In addition to disagreements on wages and benefits, the union said Costco had rejected proposals dealing with seniority pay, paid family leave, bereavement policies, sick time and safeguards against surveillance. Costco did not respond to a request for comment on the strike vote.

More than 50,000 Los Angeles County workers go on strike The two-day strike across the nation’s most populous county was initiated in response to failed negotiations with the county for a new contract after the last one expired in March, union leaders say. It is set to last until 7 p.m. on Wednesday. During this time, libraries, some health care clinics, beach bathrooms, and public service counters at the Hall of Administration are expected to be closed. Services in the medical examiner's office and public works department may also be affected, the county says. Read more.

Why this matters: The Service Employees International Union Local 721 union, which represents more than 55,000 workers, has accused the county of 44 labor law violations during contract negotiations, including surveillance and retaliation against workers engaging in union activity and contracting out positions represented by the union. “This is the workforce that got LA County through emergency after emergency,” said union leader David Green in a statement. “That’s why we have had it with the labor law violations and demand respect for our workers.”   LA County says it's facing “unprecedented stresses” on its budget, including a tentative $4 billion settlement of thousands of childhood sexual assault claims, a projected $2 billion in impacts related to the LA wildfires in January, and the potential loss of hundreds of millions in federal funding. “We do not want to negotiate ourselves into a structural deficit — which could lead to layoffs and service reductions,” spokesperson Elizabeth Marcellino said.
