No Titan survivors

All five people aboard the Titan submersible, lost at sea since Sunday, are presumed dead, Coast Guard officials said at a news conference this afternoon.

The latest: Officials said a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) discovered debris from the submersible in a search area near the Titanic and that the vessel suffered a "catastrophic loss," reports Axios' Jacob Knutson.

• "It is an incredibly unforgiving environment, down there on the sea floor, and the debris is consistent with a catastrophic implosion of the vessel," said an undersea expert who spoke this afternoon.

After the debris was found, officials immediately contacted the families of those aboard the submersible.

• "On behalf of the United States Coast Guard and the entire unified command, I offer my deepest condolence to the families," said Rear Adm. John Mauger, the First Coast Guard District commander.

The Titan was operated by OceanGate Expeditions, a privately owned company that offers tours of the Titanic wreck on the ocean floor below 12,500 feet of water around 370 miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.

The pilot was OceanGate Expeditions CEO Stockton Rush. The passengers were British businessman Hamish Harding; Paul-Henri Nargeolet, a French maritime expert; and Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his 19-year-old son Suleman.
