US approves chicken made from cultivated cells, the nation’s first ‘lab-grown’ meat

For the first time, U.S. regulators on Wednesday approved the sale of chicken made from animal cells, allowing two California companies to offer “lab-grown” meat to the nation’s restaurant tables and eventually, supermarket shelves.

? Lab-grown chicken, reservation required

José Andrés, one of the country's best-known chefs, is adding lab-grown chicken to his menu — and you'll have to make a reservation to try it, Axios D.C. co-author Anna Spiegel writes.

  • Why it matters: Lab-made meat from two California companies — Good Meat and Upside Foods — was given federal approval last month, and Andrés is one of two U.S. chefs to serve it.

Andrés partnered with Good Meat for the alternative protein, which will be available at his China Chilcano restaurant in D.C. on July 31.

  • The dish: charcoal-grilled cultivated chicken skewers with potatoes and ají Amarillo chimichurri.
  • It'll be available by reservation only, in limited quantities.

Islamic scholars consulted by a leading producer of cultivated meat say that the newfangled protein — which is grown from animal cells and doesn't require animals to be slaughtered — can be halal, or permissible under Muslim law, Jennifer A. Kingson writes for Axios What's Next.

  • And the Jewish Orthodox Union this month certified a strain of lab-grown chicken as kosher for the first time, "marking a significant step forward for the food technology's acceptance under Jewish dietary law," as The Times of Israel put it.

Why it matters: For cultivated meat to go mainstream the way its backers hope, it'll need to be accepted by people who abide by a variety of dietary laws.

Lab-grown meat isn’t on store shelves yet, but some states have already banned it

Lab-grown meat is not currently available in any U.S. grocery stores or restaurants. If some lawmakers have their way, it never will be.
