‘I’m not just faster, but taller’: how I learned to walk properly – and changed my pace, posture and perspective

When I was told I could reap huge health benefits by learning to walk better, I was sceptical. I was already pretty good at walking, I thought. It turned out I had a lot to learn

I walk up a very step hill. Sometimes run for 15 seconds, then stop and catch my breath. It is really good exercise.

Is Japanese Walking the Ultimate Exercise You’ve Been Searching For?

The Japanese walking method, also called Japanese interval walking training (IWT), means switching between slow and fast walking. You walk slowly for three minutes, then pick up the pace for three minutes, and repeat this cycle five times for a total of 30 minutes.

15 minutes to a longer life

We all get steps every day, and many of us track how many we're getting with watches or phone apps.

  • New research reveals it also matters how we get those steps: Longer sessions are better than short bursts, The Wall Street Journal's Daniel Akst writes (gift link).

? The big picture: A paper published in the Annals of Internal Medicine last month showed the results of a nearly decade-long study that tracked fairly sedentary 40- to 79-year-olds — taking a median of 5,165 steps a day.

  • Researchers found that those who got their steps through longer walks — at least 15-minute chunks — saw better health outcomes than those who got similar amounts of activity but in quicker bursts.

? The money quote: "We tend to place all the emphasis on the number of steps or the total amount of walking but neglect the crucial role of patterns," study co-author Emmanuel Stamatakis of the University of Sydney told the Journal.

Zoom out: We've catalogued many of the benefits of walking — one of the simplest and most accessible forms of exercise — and all of the twists you can put on it to glean even more benefits, like walking backwards or faster or without a GPS.

  • Now, new research suggests that making time for a daily walk instead of just accumulating daily steps can help us live longer — even if we don't consistently hit a high step count.

☀️ Our tip: Why not combine this with another research-backed good habit? Studies tell us that getting fresh air and natural light first thing in the morning does wonders for our mental health and energy levels.

  • It's one of author Mel Robbins' longevity hacks, as she told Axios CEO Jim VandeHei on "The Axios Show."

So get the perks of both practices at once by starting your day — regardless of the weather or the season — with a 15-minute morning walk.

The Difference Between Walking and Running

Both walking and running are great ways to get cardiovascular exercise. But is one a better exercise than the other?

https://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/difference-between-walking-and-running?

ps:For me walking is the better form of exercise! When I was younger and running/jogging a bit more than walking, at least for exercise, I could tell the damage that running was causing my knees, ankles, hips, etc.! Where as walking didn't do that at all!! Now at age 70+ walking for a few miles, etc., does no damage to my body, of course should you trip or something like that obviously that could really do some damage!!
