Amelia Posted October 31, 2006 Posted October 31, 2006 Rare Ocelot kitten born at Oregon zoo October 26, 2006 KGW.com Six weeks ago, the Oregon Zoo welcomed a rare baby, an endangered ocelot kitten. The male kitten is tentatively scheduled to make his zoo debut in January. He belongs to the southern Brazilian species, which inhabits the tropical and subtropical forests of southern Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina. He was born September ninth and has been receiving around-the-clock care. Zoo Director Tony Vecchio says the kitten's doting mother, Alice, "Is doing her job and is being protective of her baby." He says the kitten is now venturing out more and he says visitors will be eager to see him in January. Ocelots were placed on the endangered species list in 1982. It is now illegal to hunt them in the United States.
