Members phkrause Posted May 4, 2025 Author Members Posted May 4, 2025 Children face starvation in Gaza as food and supplies dwindle under Israel's blockade Locked down and devastated by Israeli bombings, Gaza is nearing starvation as the blockade continues. Thousands of children have already been treated for malnutrition. Food stocks at U.N. warehouses have run out. Markets are emptying. Community kitchens distributing meals for thousands are shuttering. The longest blockade on Gaza has sparked a growing international outcry, but it has failed to persuade Israel to open the borders. Members phkrause Posted May 6, 2025 Author Members Posted May 6, 2025 Israel threatens to flatten Gaza Data: Analysis of Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellite data by Corey Scher and Jamon Van Den Hoek of Oregon State University's Conflict Ecology lab. Map: Erin Davis/Axios Visuals Israel's Security Cabinet approved a plan last night to reoccupy and eventually flatten all of Gaza if a new hostage-and-ceasefire deal isn't reached soon, Axios' Barak Ravid reports. The plan calls for demolishing any buildings left standing and displacing virtually the entire population of 2 million people to a single "humanitarian area." ?️ The latest: The Security Cabinet is using President Trump's visit to the Middle East next week as a deadline for a new deal. Many Israeli officials see this operation as a nuclear option and would much prefer a deal in the next two weeks. Trump isn't playing an active role in efforts to reach a ceasefire, and has effectively given Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a green light to do as he sees fit, Israeli officials say. ? The big picture: The return to full-fledged war would come after Israel already cut off all supplies of food, water and medicine to civilians in Gaza after the ceasefire broke down two months ago. Netanyahu has rejected any proposal that ends the war entirely, pressing Hamas instead to sign a shorter-term agreement. Israeli officials hope the threat of a large-scale invasion will press Hamas to accept a deal on Israel's terms. Go deeper. Members phkrause Posted May 9, 2025 Author Members Posted May 9, 2025 A US-backed group seeks to take over Gaza aid distribution in a plan similar to Israel’s The AP has obtained a proposal from the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a group of American security contractors, ex-military officers and humanitarian aid officials, that lays out plans to take over the distribution of food and supplies in Gaza, currently run by the U.N. and other international agencies. It is based on plans similar to those designed by Israel. Read more. Why this matters: The U.N. and aid groups have rejected Israel’s moves to control aid distribution. A U.N. official said that Israel’s plans would “weaponize aid” by placing restrictions on who is eligible to receive it. Aid workers say the plans could not possibly meet the needs of Gaza’s desperate population, and that it would forcibly displace Palestinians by driving them to move nearer to the aid. Israel has blocked food, fuel, medicine and all other supplies from entering Gaza for 10 weeks, worsening a humanitarian crisis for 2.3 million Palestinians. It has said it won’t allow aid back in until a system is in place that gives it control over distribution. The Trump administration supports the new group’s proposal, said a person involved in it. The person spoke on condition of anonymity. Ahead of his trip to the Middle East this week, U.S. President Donald Trump said “a lot of talk” was going on about Gaza and that his administration will soon have more to say about a new proposal. This may include a new push for a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, the release of hostages and an influx of aid to Palestinians. Members phkrause Posted July 31, 2025 Author Members Posted July 31, 2025 Gaza's hunger crisis Data: COGAT, a unit of the Israeli military; Note: "Other aid" includes water, shelter, gas, medical supplies and infrastructure equipment; Chart: Kavya Beheraj/Axios Children are starving in Gaza today after the Israeli government's decision four months ago to suspend all aid into the enclave, Axios' Dave Lawler writes. While that decision has been partially reversed over the last two months, it's had devastating and ongoing implications for vulnerable Palestinian civilians in Gaza, aid groups report. The big picture: At least 16 children under 5 have died of starvation-related illnesses since July 17, and half a million people are currently experiencing "an extreme lack of food," according to a UN-affiliated report out yesterday. Between the lines: Gaza was already facing one of the world's worst humanitarian crises prior to March, but the ceasefire that began on Jan. 17 significantly improved the situation. Israel's decision to suspend all aid and unilaterally end the ceasefire in March drove the situation to its current desperate state. On the ground: "The sound of children crying from hunger never stops. Every day, people knock on our doors asking for food. Not money — just bread," said Rania Al Shrehi, an International Rescue Committee staffer in Gaza. Go deeper: How Israel's blockade caused starvation in Gaza. Members phkrause Posted August 6, 2025 Author Members Posted August 6, 2025 U.S. plans Gaza aid takeover The U.S. plans to significantly increase its role in providing humanitarian aid to Gaza, according to two U.S. officials and one Israeli official, Axios' Barak Ravid and Marc Caputo report. Trump discussed the plans with U.S. special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff over dinner last night, following Witkoff's trip to Israel and Gaza, the sources say. A U.S. official said it was decided that the Trump administration will "take over" management of the humanitarian effort in Gaza because Israel isn't handling it adequately. The official didn't say what role the U.S. would actually play — but said Gulf countries like Qatar will contribute funds, while Jordan and Egypt will also likely be involved. The White House didn't respond to requests for comment. Trump is "not thrilled" about the idea of the U.S. taking charge, "but it kind of has to happen," another U.S. official said. "The starvation problem in Gaza is getting worse," the official continued. "Donald Trump does not like that. He does not want babies to starve. He wants mothers to be able to nurse their children. He's becoming fixated on that." Israel supports the increased U.S. role, all three sources say. The U.S. is "going to spend a lot of money in order to help us significantly improve the humanitarian situation so that it will be less of an issue," the Israeli official said. Reality check: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plan to escalate the war in Gaza could jeopardize Trump's hopes of dramatically increasing aid and alleviating the humanitarian crisis there. Members phkrause Posted February 21 Author Members Posted February 21 Ramadan arrives in Gaza under shaky ceasefire deal, but the festive spirit eludes many Palestinians Ramadan – the Muslim holy month – has begun in Gaza under a fragile ceasefire deal, but many say the joyous spirit of the month has disappeared. They grapple with the hardships of their daily lives and the grief and losses of the Israel-Hamas war. Read more. Why this matters: During Ramadan, observant Muslims fast from dawn to sunset. It’s a time for increased worship, religious reflection and charity. In normal circumstances, the month often brings families and friends together to break their fast in joyous gatherings. But circumstances in Gaza are far from normal after the war and widespread destruction. Some of the difficulties were on display at a charity kitchen where dozens crowded, many with their arms outstretched as they vied for a spot and held empty pots.
