LANCASTER, MASS— Kevin Watson, an Atlantic Union College student, died Friday night after being struck by a car driven by a 56-year-old Leominster man who was charged with a second drunken driving offense, according to information from Lancaster police and the college.

The driver, Michael P. Duprey of 157 Granite St., Leominster, also was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, according to police records.

Mr. Duprey is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrowin Clinton District Court, said Officer Everett Moody, a Lancaster police detective.

Mr. Watson, 30, of Springfield, was struck by a car about 6:35 p.m. while walking across Main Street (Route 70) near Narrow Lane near the college campus.

Mr. Duprey was driving north on Main Street in a gray 2003 Hyundai Accent SE, police said.

Paramedics performed lifesaving efforts on Mr. Watson at the scene and on the way to Clinton Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 7:30 p.m., according to a college press release.

Friends gathered yesterday next to bouquets of flowers left at the accident scene in memory of Mr. Watson, who was a junior studying social work at the Seventh-day Adventist college.

These people just burn me up. They keep driving no matter what. You take their liscense away, their car away and they still keep drinking and driving. Grrrrrrrr

The DUI penalties in the USA are simply not high enough

My opinion -

First offense : loose license for at least a year

Second offense : jail

Driving without a licence : jail

CLINTON— The lawyer for a Leominster man accused in the drunken driving death of an Atlantic Union College student struck on Route 70 in Lancaster Friday evening says his client, Michael P. Duprey, had not been drinking or using drugs, but simply did not see the man until it was too late.

Mr. Duprey, 56, of 157 Granite St., Leominster, was arraigned yesterday in Clinton District Court before Judge Martha A. Brennan. He had posted the $10,000 bail over the weekend, but was ordered by Judge Brennan not to drive, to report daily to the probation department, avoid drugs and alcohol and submit to random urine testing.

He is charged with motor vehicle homicide while under the influence of alcohol and negligence; motor vehicle homicide while under the influence of drugs and negligence; driving under the influence of alcohol, second offense; and driving under the influence of drugs.

If you're gonna drink alcohol, then DONT DRIVE!!!!!!! I can't imagine this person getting arrested and arraigned without *some* sort of blood alcohol level *proof*! Not everyone just fell off the turnip truck..

I feel so awful for the victim's family and friends.
