Members phkrause Posted August 29 Author Members Posted August 29 Spanish Museum Heist A group of men raided the so-called Treasure of Villena from a museum in eastern Spain yesterday. The four-minute heist deprives Europe of its most extensive prehistoric treasure, a roughly 3,000-year-old collection valued at over $2M. The robbery took place between 5:20 am and 5:24 am local time, with thieves luring police to a sports center at the town’s outskirts minutes before the raid. In that time, they took all but seven of the collection’s 66 artifacts—bracelets, bowls, bottles, and other pieces made of gold, silver, mixed metals, and amber (see photos). The robbery is the latest in a series of museum heists culminating in a Europol warning last week. Villena's Bronze Age collection was discovered in 1963, when archaeologist José María Soler found the pieces in the town's dry riverbed (watch an archival newsreel; click "settings" for English captions). While the inclusion of two iron pieces stumped researchers for decades, a 2023 study found the metals originated from a meteor. Members phkrause Posted October 29 Author Members Posted October 29 Spain reckons with second deadly train crash of the year ahead of national election Spain’s second high-speed rail disaster this year, a crash in which one train struck another from behind, killing 68 people, has raised fresh concerns about the safety of the country’s rail network. Transport Minister Óscar Puente said human error caused Wednesday’s crash. Read more. What to know: The Wednesday crash involved a train striking a stationary one in Spain’s Toledo province, caused by what Puente called an “inexplicable” order from a central command center for Spain’s trains after a security system had failed. He said the train engineers were not to blame. Spain’s network of high-speed rail has been considered one of the nation’s crowning achievements. It ranks second to China in track mileage in the world. Until this year, it had not endured a deadly crash since coming into service over three decades ago. In January, 46 people died when one train jumped the track in southern Spain. Both deadly crashes this year involved a train operated by the state-owned RENFE company and one from the privately owned Italian IRYO. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez pledged an investigation into the latest crash and improvements to prevent another tragedy.
