Virginia's House of Delegates now has the first Black speaker in its 405-year history — Don Scott, a Democrat from Portsmouth.

• Why it matters: Scott, 58, now reigns over a chamber that voted to block the desegregation of public schools nearly 70 years ago, inside a Capitol built by enslaved Virginians, in the former capital of the Confederacy.

"It's great to be the first, but you could be remembered for [being] first to screw it all up, too," Scott told Axios Richmond's Sabrina Moreno with a laugh yesterday, a day after being sworn in.

• "I want to be remembered [as] the person that was the first African American — but I was also efficient, excellent, capable and got the job done."

What Scott told us:

• Trump shouldn't be on the ballot in the Commonwealth: "He's too extreme for Virginia and he'll continue to be."
• Scott expects to see compromises with Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) on issues both parties agree on: preventing gun violence, retaining teachers and reducing opioid addiction.

Scott's mother, Helen, flew in for his first day on the job.

• "She was amazed," her son told us. "She said, 'I'm looking at you and you're my son and I'm proud of you. But you are something else right now.'"
