Russian President Vladimir Putin went to great lengths to silence a lone activist, as he continues to manipulate elections. Americans can reject those values.

As the world struggles to grasp the death of Russian lawyer and political activist Alexei Navalny, which came after years of depraved treatment by the Kremlin, the timing could not be more ominous.

?? New Navalny clues

U.S. intelligence agencies have concluded Russian President Vladimir Putin likely didn't directly order Alexei Navalny's February death in a remote Russian penal colony.

  • The assessment is "broadly accepted within the intelligence community and shared by several agencies, including the Central Intelligence Agency," The Wall Street Journal reported.

Between the lines: Putin was still ultimately responsible for Navalny's death, the agencies found. But there was "no smoking gun" that he directed in.

? Navalny's final message

Navalny book cover

Cover: Knopf

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny wrote that he would die in prison — almost two years before his death in a remote Arctic penal colony, according to excerpts of his posthumous memoir published by The New Yorker:

  • Why it matters: The book — called "Patriot" and out next Tuesday — acts as Navalny's "final letter to the world," the publisher says.

P.S. Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich's memoir on his nearly 500-day detention in Russia is due out in 2026.
