Queen Elizabeth II has announced she is to visit the United States next year to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the first permanent English settlement in North America.

The 80-year-old monarch said she and her husband Prince Philip, 85, would undertake a state visit in May to mark the anniversary of the Jamestown Settlement, where English migrants landed in 1607 and established the first successful English colony in the New World.

In a statement issued while he was in Moscow, US President George W. Bush welcomed the visit.

"The United States and the United Kingdom enjoy an extraordinary friendship that is sustained by deep historical and cultural ties and a commitment to defend freedom around the world." he said Wednesday. "

We look forward to Her Majesty's state visit as an occasion to celebrate these enduring bonds."

The queen last visited Jamestown in the eastern US state of Virginia for the 350th anniversary in 1957. The celebrations attracted more than one million visitors, guests and dignitaries.

Her visit was the first to the United States after becoming queen five years earlier.

The monarch announced her new trip in the Queen's Speech at the state opening of parliament, setting out the government's legislative plans for the coming year.

The queen also said that she and her husband would visit Uganda next year to open the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Kampala. The royal couple visited the country together in 1954.

A statement from the queen's office later confirmed the visits.

The queen and Prince Philip have made three state visits to the United States: in 1957, 1976 for the US bicentennial celebrations and in 1991. There was also an official visit to the US west coast in 1983.

She met presidents John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, George Bush senior, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush when they visited Britain.

That is an honor to have the queen visit us ... wonder if she'll notice any changes since 1991?
