America swings red

A map showing the partisan shift, by county, among voters in the United States. Overall, between 2020 and 2024, the U.S. shifted 1.2 points more Democratic. 1,910 counties shifted more Democratic, while 1,197 shifted more Republican.

If some Americans sleepwalked into a Trump presidency in 2016, they were wide awake this time around.

  • Why it matters: The polls were neck and neck, the stakes were clear and turnout was high. The American people definitively chose Trump, Axios' Dave Lawler writes.

? Trump won the popular vote for the first time. He won every swing state that's been called, and he gained significant new support — even in several blue states.

  • He gained ground this time around with Black voters, Hispanic voters, suburban voters and young voters.

️ Flashback: Trump won in 2016 with an incredibly narrow Electoral College victory, and lost the popular vote. That election took millions of Americans by surprise.

  • After a chaotic four years, a resounding 2020 loss and the Jan. 6 attack, even many of his allies thought he couldn't win again.

Voters knew what they were getting with Trump this time around — and 72 million and counting voted for it.

Election

President Joe Biden will address the nation today at 11 a.m. ET following Vice President Kamala Harris' loss to President-elect Donald Trump. Biden's address comes a day after Harris delivered her concession speech, promising to keep up the "fight that fueled this campaign." In her 12-minute remarks, she acknowledged the stinging loss while committing to a peaceful transfer of power. Meanwhile, Trump is ready to move on his agenda and could announce staff picks within days, sources said, as his allies are already jockeying for high-powered spots in his administration. As Trump prepared his next steps, CNN reported that special counsel Jack Smith was in talks with the DOJ about winding down the federal cases against the president-elect.

How 5 key demographic groups voted in 2024: AP VoteCast

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump won the presidency after holding tight to his core base of voters and slightly expanding his coalition to include several groups that have traditionally been a part of the Democratic base. That finding comes from AP VoteCast, a sweeping survey of more than 120,000 voters nationwide that shows what issues mattered to voters in this election.

? Trump gains with Latino voters

A stacked bar chart shows the share of Latino voters who said they voted for Harris or Trump in the 2024 presidential election in the U.S. and several battleground states based on exit polls conducted Nov. 5. Nationally, 53% of Latinos said they voted for Kamala Harris, while 47% said they voted for Trump. Pennsylvania, Georgia and Arizona had the lowest shares of Latinos who said they voted for Trump, at 42% each.
Data: Edison Research/National Election Pool. Chart: Alex Fitzpatrick/Axios

Growing Latino support for Trump echoes a long history of anti-immigrant sentiment among many Latino civil rights leaders, Axios' Russell Contreras writes.

  • Months before the election, an Axios-Ipsos Latino Poll, in partnership with Noticias Telemundo, found that the percentage of Latinos who say they support building a border wall and deporting all undocumented immigrants had jumped by at least 10 points since 2021.
  • An Axios Vibes survey in April also found that 45% of Latinos supported mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.

? "Folks in the border region or in Texas," said Brian Behnken, an Iowa State history professor, "look at undocumented workers or undocumented people, and say: 'You know, you're making the rest of us look bad.'"

Election

President-elect Donald Trump has won the battleground state of Nevada, CNN projects, bringing his electoral vote count to 301 as his team begins preparing for the transfer of power. The state had voted blue in the last two elections, in favor of Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden, so this marks a shift to the right. Trump has also selected campaign manager Susie Wiles to be his White House chief of staff — the first woman to hold the role. Many other senior positions in the government have been helmed by women, including almost all of the Cabinet posts, top judicial seats and House leadership roles. No woman has ever assumed the top Pentagon position, however. All eyes are on who Trump will choose for other key roles in the coming weeks.

Three I’s dominate election results

As the results rolled in Tuesday night it became clear the 2024 general election was about the Three I’s: inflation, immigration and independents.

American anger, fear and apathy equates to us going back after all

Combine the adjectives of anger, fear and apathy to describe any audience, and it predictably equates to trouble. Those descriptors are the features of the American electorate today.

One more river to cross

My family and I stopped at Buffalo Wild Wings in Georgia a few weekends ago after watching one of our kids take part in a marching band competition. Surrounding us in restaurant were wall-mounted televisions. Most showed sports, repeatedly punctuated by political ads.

Ranked voting will decide a pivotal congressional race. How does that work?

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — In a pivotal congressional race in Maine, the state’s ranked choice voting system is being used to determine the winner, but that won’t be the end of it. The currently trailing candidate has requested a full recount that won’t begin until after more than 12,000 votes have been reallocated to determine a majority.

Multiple election offices report receiving mailed ballots misdirected from other states

? Harris' big Biden gap

Top U.S. presidential popular vote totals
Chart: Axios Visuals

Vice President Harris' 2024 vote total has now surpassed President-elect Trump's total in 2020 for third-highest of all time.

  • The Trump-Harris popular vote margin is the narrowest since Bush vs. Gore in 2000, despite Trump's decisive electoral college victory.

? Reality check: Harris won 7 million fewer voters than President Biden's 81.3 million in 2020, easily the highest total ever (charted above).

  • Harris won far fewer voters than Biden in New York City, Chicago and L.A., and ran behind Biden in blue areas generally, a New York Times analysis shows.

? Between the lines: The high vote totals for Trump, Biden and Harris relative to previous cycles are due in large part to population growth. But both were also unusually high-turnout elections.

  • Overall turnout in 2024 as a proportion of eligible voters was 63.7%, per a University of Florida tracker — lower than 2020 (65.8%) but higher than any other election in decades.
