Hundreds of people marched through the French Quarter last night with the Society of Joan of Arc — reclaiming some of the joy of the start of Mardi Gras in the face of an attack that still has the city reeling.

  • "My hope is to recapture what was stolen from us," Joan of Arc volunteer Ramona Graham told Axios New Orleans. "That night, that's what was stolen: our joy and our music."
  • "But we're here. We're together, and we're not allowing this to defeat the spirit of our culture."

? Our thought bubble, from Axios New Orleans' Chelsea Brasted: New Orleans has experienced more than its fair share of tragedy, but its optimism always bounces back.

  • That verve is what brought people out last night, just after President Biden gathered with mourners.
  • It was always going to be weird. But, as it turns out, New Orleans is pretty good at weird.
