A new survey from the nonpartisan Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) finds that Americans are retreating into ideological camps, viewing the opposing side not as a political rival, but as threats to democracy itself. 🧮 By the numbers: 51% of Americans say they're extremely or very proud of being American, down sharply from 82% in 2013. Less than half of Democrats believe that being born in America (42%), believing in God (41%), or being Christian (29%) are important to national identity. A majority of Republicans say being born in America, believing in God and being Christian are important to being truly American. Americans are also split on the American Dream, with less than half believing that hard work gets you ahead. US support for Israel slips as Democrats grow more critical, AP-NORC poll finds After decades of reliable bipartisan backing for Israel, a new AP-NORC poll reveals a dramatic erosion of support for the longtime U.S. ally, with rising opposition from Democrats and signs of division among Republicans. About one in three U.S. adults — including roughly half of Democrats — believe that Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians during the war in Gaza. It’s an accusation that’s been leveled by some human rights organizations and vehemently denied by Israel and the United States government. Read more.

Why this matters: About 58% of Democrats now say the U.S. is “too supportive” of the Israelis, up from 45% in an AP-NORC poll from January 2024 when former President Joe Biden was in office. That includes 51% of Jewish Democrats in the new poll. How views on Trump’s handling of Iran have shifted, according to a new AP-NORC poll

Most Americans say the war in Iran has not been worth fighting, and President Donald Trump’s approval rating on Iran has fallen slightly since last month, according to a new AP-NORC poll. Our polls and surveys analyst Linley Sanders is with us this morning to unpack the latest results.

What’s the most interesting finding from this latest poll? There’s been an apparent decline in Republicans’ approval of how President Trump is handling Iran, dropping from roughly 71% last month to 61% now. That comes as just 28% of U.S. adults approve of Trump’s approach, and about two-thirds of Americans say the war with Iran has not been worth fighting. That frustration could be a problem for Republicans as the midterms approach. Most Americans also say it’s highly important that the U.S. prioritize keeping gas prices low and negotiate a ceasefire.   How does Trump’s approval trajectory compare with past presidents? In this new poll, 33% of U.S. adults approve of how Trump is handing the presidency overall. That’s slightly below where he was at this point in his first term, and similar to where former President Joe Biden was about one and a half years into his presidency.
