While embarrassing to me I wanted to describe what happened to me this last Saturday to possibly prevent the same thing from happening to someone else who was as ignorant as I was about this topic. My wife and I drove to Canada and checked into a hot spring resort this last Saturday and within an hour of our arrival we climbed into a 105-degree spring fed pool. Within two minutes my wife said that was too extreme for her and got out and went to another pool that was cooler (they had different pools of different temps). Foolishly I said I was going to get my money's worth and stayed in that pool. Prior to entering we both saw a sign that said no glass bottles or drinking glasses. Long story made short  - after an hour and 20 some minutes I lost consciousness in the pool and had to be drug out of it (one should only stay in hot water like that for 10 to 15 minutes tops), had some sort of seizure. Ambulance transported me to the hospital where the primary concern was possibility of a stroke or cardiac event (both negative thankfully). Diagnoses was severe heat syncope with convulsive syncope (I think I'm spelling that right). The first question the Doctor asked me was to detail my alcohol consumption for the previous 24 hours - I'm not much of a drinker so my answer was a zero. In any event the last thing I remember was I was feeling dizzy and started to move to exit area and that was it, no memory after that until I woke up on the floor with a bunch of people over me and my poor wife in hysterics. Hot springs can be dangerous.

We have done fever baths and it is closely monitored.  20 minutes is the maximum time once core temperature is reached.

I have a story about hot springs.

There are many volcanoes and hot springs in the Philippines.  My wife and I were taken to this smaller island of about 5,000 people to do evangelism. Most of the island had HOT wells.  We were given a nice house for 10 days. Like many houses it had a 55 gallon water drum elevated near the roof. You filled the drum with the attached hand pump. They hired a man to come every morning to fill the drum. But the problem was, the water was so hot. I suspect 180 to 190 degrees f.

So the method here is to fill a pail and take a bath (shower) with a cup called a dipper.

But it was too hot.  I would fill the pail, and it would take two or more hours to cool down enough not to burn you. There was no way to cool it down. There was no cold water anywhere. The outside temp was 85 degrees f. We just had to wait. I even tried getting up early. But no, he was always earlier than me.

It was a challenge.

We were slowly warmed up.  A thermometer deep under the tongue I think was 103 sustained for 20 minutes and then gradually cool water circulating until just warm.  Really opened up all the blood vessels and a nice drop in blood pressure.  This higher temperature sustained stops cancer cells and some die.
